Check These First
A few things worth trying before you call:
- Power and door latch. Make sure the door clicks fully shut and the breaker hasn’t tripped. A partially latched door is a common cause of “won’t start” calls.
- Delay start. Some models default to a delay cycle after a power blip. Check the control panel before assuming the machine is dead.
- Filter. Most dishwashers made after 2010 have a twist-out filter at the bottom of the tub. A clogged filter causes standing water and poor cleaning. Rinse it under the tap and reinstall.
- Drain hose. If the machine was recently moved or someone worked under the sink, confirm the drain hose still has its high loop or anti-siphon air gap at the cabinet.
If those don’t fix it, stop there. The rest requires pulling the machine and testing components.
What the Repair Actually Involves
The failures listed above (worn pump seal, failed heating element, bad control board, cracked sump) all sit inside the machine. Diagnosing them correctly means testing components with a meter, tracing error codes to the actual part, and ordering brand-specific parts. Bosch, LG, and Samsung in particular use proprietary connectors and calibration steps that aren’t in general guides. Getting it wrong means a worse failure or a flooded cabinet floor.
