When a coffee grinder jams and will not turn on, unplug it before doing anything else. Powering the switch off is not enough. A stalled motor can still be loaded, a capacitor can hold charge, and a burr chamber that is packed with coffee does not become safe because the front switch is in the off position.
The failure usually begins in one of two ways. Something hard enters the burrs, such as a pebble, small stone, or cherry pit that survived processing. Or grounds compact so tightly between the burrs that the motor stalls and the thermal protection opens. The sound before the stop and the result after cooling give the first useful clues.

The common causes
Compacted grounds
This is the most common cause. Grinding very fine for too long, running a long session, or leaving old coffee packed in the chamber can cement the burrs together. The motor may hum briefly before the protection cuts it off. If the thermal protection opened first, the machine may be silent.
Foreign object in the burrs
Pebbles are the classic offender, especially when a bag of coffee contains a piece of hard material that was not sorted out. A cherry pit or another dense object can stop a burr set immediately. A sharp crack or crunch just before the seizure is evidence worth preserving. Do not keep powering the grinder to see whether it “gets through” the object.
Thermal cutoff
Many commercial grinders use a thermal fuse or thermal cutout that trips when the motor overheats or draws too much current against a jam. Depending on the design, it may reset automatically in roughly 10 to 20 minutes, or it may have a manual reset. The practical operator interval is 15 to 20 minutes fully unplugged, not a series of one-minute restarts.
If the grinder starts freely with no coffee after cooling, the thermal trip may have protected the motor. That still leaves the original load to correct. Adjusting coarser and using shorter grinding sessions may prevent a repeat, but a thermal trip that returns needs an inspection.
Worn or misaligned burrs
This is less often a sudden failure. A worn or misaligned burr usually creates progressively harder starts over days or weeks. One burr can shift toward the other, or a bearing can add enough friction that the motor stalls under load. If the grinder has been running rough before the jam, do not assume the obstruction is the whole story.
Safe checks after unplugging
Give the unplugged grinder 15 to 20 minutes if thermal protection may have tripped. Remove the beans from the hopper. Look for a foreign object that is plainly accessible from above, but do not reach into the burr set and do not insert a tool.
After cooling and emptying, one short test with no coffee loaded can tell you whether the motor is free. If it runs freely, do not immediately load the hopper and continue the shift. First consider what caused the jam, whether the grind was too fine, and whether the burrs made an abnormal sound.
If the grinder still will not start, stop there. Repeatedly hitting the power switch against a mechanical jam can burn the motor winding. Stall-cycling under load is one of the fastest ways to turn a blocked burr set into a motor repair.
What not to do
Do not manually spin the burrs while the grinder is plugged in. Do not blast compressed air into an assembled burr chamber. Air tends to drive packed grounds deeper into the burr gap instead of lifting them out. Do not wedge a screwdriver or other metal object into the gap. Do not force the adjustment collar, and do not keep cycling power to test a motor that is already telling you it cannot turn.
Basic hopper and exterior cleaning is fine. Surface cleaning cannot prove that the burr chamber is clear. If the jam remains, the top burr or carrier needs to be removed with the correct procedure.
What a technician diagnoses
The first service step is to remove the top burr or carrier and inspect the burr set, chamber, and collar for foreign material. If the burrs are clear, the technician checks whether the motor shaft turns freely by hand with the machine disconnected. A motor that turns freely by hand but will not start electrically points toward a start capacitor, a thermal fuse that is not resetting, or a control-board fault.
A motor that is stiff or locked is a mechanical problem. Possible causes include a bent shaft, a seized bearing, or material lodged deeper than the surface inspection could reach. The burr faces receive their own inspection. Fresh chip marks, gouges, irregular pitting, or bright metal where material chipped off mean the burrs need replacement even if the motor starts after the jam clears. Damaged burrs will ruin grind quality and can eventually chip the opposing burr.
The technician also restores alignment after clearing the chamber. A grinder that starts but has a changed burr position is not back in service until the grind is checked.

Repair or replacement
For quality commercial grinders such as Mazzer, Mahlkönig, Eureka, and Anfim, a motor rewind, new burrs, or a capacitor swap can cost a fraction of a replacement machine. That comparison changes if the frame or shaft is damaged, the motor is beyond economical repair, or the grinder cannot be calibrated after service. A diagnosis gives you the numbers before you make that decision.
If the grinder remains down after cooling and the hopper check, it is past what patience fixes. A thermal fuse may need replacement, a stone may have chipped both burrs, and a forced jam may have burned a winding. Stop the experiment while the failure is still identifiable.
