Older cottages in Linda Mar and up in the Manor run a Williams wall furnace that was never built to sit a few blocks from saltwater spray. Burner housings and valve bodies rust from the outside in, and that shows up as a rough flame or a valve that sticks.

- Rusted burner assembly cutting flame quality. Salt air works on the burner ports the same way it works on a bike left outside. The flame goes ragged and uneven instead of a clean blue line. I clean or replace the burner assembly depending on how far the rust has gone.
- Thermocouple failing early from coastal humidity. The fog and damp Pacifica gets most of the year shortens the life of a thermocouple compared to inland cities. When the pilot lights but the burner won't stay on, I test the millivolt signal and replace it.
