- Salt air corrosion on the gas valve. The constant marine layer along Main Street and the harbor corrodes the gas valve body and fittings faster than I see inland, sometimes causing a slow leak at a fitting or a valve that sticks partway open. I check every fitting for corrosion during a diagnostic and replace the valve if it's gotten into the seat.
- Thermocouple failure sped up by coastal moisture. Salt air moisture works into the thermocouple connection at the gas valve faster out here than elsewhere, so the pilot drops out more often than the unit's age alone would explain. I clean the connection, test the millivolt reading, and replace the thermocouple when it reads weak.
- Rust through on the heat exchanger. On the older cottages near the coast, the metal heat exchanger can rust through from years of damp salt air even while the rest of the unit still runs fine. I inspect it closely on every coastal call and won't leave a unit running if the exchanger shows rust-through, since that lets combustion gas into the room.
