Tempstar in Hillsborough
Tempstar heating and cooling in Hillsborough.
Hillsborough sits on the mid-Peninsula at the edge of San Francisco Bay, and the climate here is unlike the hot inland valleys. Summers are cool and foggy along the lower elevations, with occasional warm spells pushing east off the hills. The housing stock reflects the money in the zip code: large custom homes from the 1930s through the 1960s, most with original or upgraded ducted systems, and a fair number of newer-build estates with zoned multi-stage equipment. Tempstar shows up here less often than Carrier or Lennox, but when it does it's usually in a home where the original contractor went the value route on a furnace and condenser replacement. Same Carrier-engineered platform underneath, just a different badge.
When a Tempstar system comes in for diagnosis I start at the control board and pull any stored fault codes before I touch anything else. The communicating models in the QuietComfort line log fault history that tells you whether a pressure switch is nuisance-tripping or genuinely failing. In Hillsborough specifically I pay close attention to the outdoor unit: the bay air carries enough salt and moisture that aluminum fin stock on condensers corrodes faster than you'd see in Walnut Creek or Pleasanton. A unit that reads low on capacity or trips the high-pressure limit in mild 65-degree weather often has coil fouling behind it, not a refrigerant problem. I confirm the diagnosis before writing anything up.
Bay Area HVAC Service is our HVAC division, operating out of San Ramon, and we cover Hillsborough on scheduled calls. The diagnostic fee is $75 and we apply it toward the repair if you move forward. You get a written quote before any work starts, no exceptions. Our technicians hold EPA Section 608 Universal certification for refrigerant handling. CSLB license 1136642. Repair work carries a 1-year warranty; new installs carry 10 years on parts and 10 years on labor.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Hot Surface Igniter Failure. The standard failure on Tempstar gas furnaces is a cracked hot surface igniter. You call for heat, the inducer spins up, and then nothing: no ignition, the board locks out after one or two attempts, and the system sits cold. The igniters are silicon nitride on the newer models and silicon carbide on older units; both crack from thermal cycling and both fail the same way. I verify igniter resistance is outside spec before ordering the part, swap the correct igniter for that board revision, and confirm flame establishment and sensor signal before closing the unit.
- Flame Sensor Contamination Cutting Out After Ignition. This one shows up as a furnace that lights, runs for a few seconds, then shuts back down. The flame sensor rod builds an oxide coating over time and the microamp signal drops below what the board will accept as proof of flame. In Hillsborough's damp bayside air that coating builds faster than in a dry inland climate. I clean the rod, verify the microamp reading at steady-state flame, and check the ground path back to the board because a floating ground will cause the same symptom even with a clean sensor.
- Condenser Capacitor and Contactor Wear on the Outdoor Unit. On the Tempstar AC and heat pump condensers the run capacitor and the contactor are the two components I expect to replace after five or six years on the Peninsula. Salt-laden fog air is harder on electrical contacts than dry inland air: contactors pit and the pull-in voltage climbs until the compressor starts hard or not at all. The capacitor degrades quietly and the compressor draws high amps before it finally won't start. I measure capacitance and contact resistance on every service call rather than waiting for a full failure, and I quote both together when one is marginal because the labor overlaps.

FAQ
Tempstar in Hillsborough questions, answered.
-
Do you actually come out to Hillsborough, or is that outside your area?
We come out to Hillsborough on scheduled calls. Our base is San Ramon, which is roughly 25 to 30 miles east, and the mid-Peninsula is part of our regular coverage territory. We are not a same or next-day emergency service, but we schedule promptly and we show up on time. -
Is Tempstar equipment a reasonable fit for a Hillsborough home, or should I be replacing it with something else?
Tempstar runs on the same Carrier engineering platform as Heil and Comfortmaker, so the hardware is solid. The tradeoff is that the dealer network is thinner and resale perception is lower than a Carrier or Lennox badge. For a home where you plan to stay and heat or cool efficiency is the priority, a well-maintained Tempstar unit will perform the same as its badge siblings. For a larger Hillsborough estate where zoned variable-speed performance matters, it is worth a conversation about whether the communicating QuietComfort tier covers your needs or whether a move to a different platform makes sense at next replacement. I will give you a straight answer at the estimate, not a sales pitch. -
What does the $75 diagnostic actually include, and what warranty covers the repair?
The diagnostic covers a full system evaluation: fault code pull, electrical measurements, refrigerant pressures if the system is running, and a written summary of what I found and what it will cost to fix. If you go ahead with the repair that $75 comes off the invoice. Parts and labor on the repair are backed by a 1-year warranty. If we are talking about a full system replacement rather than a repair, installs carry 10 years on parts and 10 years on labor. If there are utility or manufacturer rebates that apply I will confirm the actual current amounts at estimate time.
