Tempstar in Los Altos Hills

Tempstar heating and cooling in Los Altos Hills.

Los Altos Hills sits on the Peninsula foothills at roughly 300 to 700 feet elevation, and the housing stock reflects that. Most properties are large-lot custom builds or renovated mid-century ranches, and a lot of them have forced-air systems that have been running since the original construction. Tempstar shows up here more than people expect. It is the same Carrier-engineered platform as Heil and Comfortmaker, typically sold through smaller independent contractors, so owners bought sound hardware without paying a badge premium. The Peninsula climate is mild enough that AC does not run as hard as it does in the Tri-Valley, but summer afternoons still push into the 80s and 90s on the inland side of these hills, and the units age on their own schedule regardless.

When I diagnose a Tempstar system, I pull fault codes off the control board first. The QuietComfort and communicating models store history, so I can see whether a flame sensor lockout happened once last week or repeatedly over months. I do not start replacing parts to see what sticks. On the communicating variable-speed systems, I read the board data before I touch anything, because a wiring fault or a failed communicating module mimics symptoms that look like a bad blower or a refrigerant problem until you actually read what the equipment is telling you. Outdoor units on shaded north-facing exposures in this area also accumulate debris in the coil fins, which backs up suction pressure and stresses the compressor. I check coil condition and airflow before I call a refrigerant diagnosis.

Bay Area HVAC Service is our HVAC division, based in San Ramon. We cover Los Altos Hills on a regular basis. Diagnostic is $75, and that fee comes off the invoice if you move forward with the repair on the same visit. You get a written quote before any work starts, no surprises. We are EPA Section 608 Universal certified for refrigerant handling and licensed through CSLB under number 1136642. Repair work carries a one-year warranty. If the conversation turns toward a replacement, installations come with ten years on parts and ten years on labor, and we confirm what rebates and incentives actually pay at the time of the estimate rather than quoting numbers that may have changed.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Hot Surface Igniter Failure. The silicon nitride igniter on Tempstar gas furnaces cracks with age and thermal cycling. The symptom is a call for heat that produces inducer run and gas valve click but no flame, followed by a lockout code on the board. On older QuietComfort units that have been running through multiple heating seasons, this is the single most common furnace call we get. I confirm igniter resistance is out of spec, replace it with the correct Carrier-platform part, and verify ignition timing before closing up.
  • Flame Sensor Carbon Fouling. A dirty flame sensor causes the furnace to light normally and then shut down within a few seconds, often repeating two or three times before the board locks out. The sensor rod accumulates a thin oxide layer that prevents it from passing enough microamp signal to prove flame. This is especially common on systems that sit idle through most of the mild Peninsula summer and then run hard the first cold nights of November. Cleaning the rod and verifying microamp reading at the board usually resolves it. If the rod is pitted or corroded past the point of reliable contact, replacement is straightforward.
  • Condenser Capacitor and Contactor Wear. Run capacitors and contactors on Tempstar outdoor units are wear items with a predictable service life. A weak capacitor causes the compressor or condenser fan motor to draw high amperage on startup, which either trips a breaker or causes the unit to cycle off on thermal protection. A pitted contactor can weld partially closed or fail to pull in reliably. On units that have been running for seven or more years in Los Altos Hills, I measure capacitance and check contactor face condition during every diagnostic. Replacing both at the same time, when one is already near end of life, avoids a second diagnostic visit a season later.

FAQ

Tempstar in Los Altos Hills questions, answered.

  • Do you actually drive out to Los Altos Hills, or is San Ramon too far?
We make that drive regularly. Los Altos Hills is well within our Peninsula service area. The run from our San Ramon base through 680 and 101 puts us there without issue, and we schedule Los Altos Hills calls alongside other Peninsula stops so you are not paying a premium for the distance.
  • Is Tempstar equipment a reasonable fit for homes in this area, or should I be looking at a different brand for a replacement?
Tempstar is a legitimate option for most Los Altos Hills homes. It is the same core hardware as Carrier, built on the same platform, typically at a lower price because it moves through independent contractors rather than big dealer networks. For a large custom home on a hillside lot with existing ductwork, a Tempstar communicating variable-speed system performs the same job as the equivalent Carrier unit. The tradeoff is the dealer network is smaller, so you want a contractor who actually knows the platform. For homes without ductwork, we would steer the conversation toward a ductless heat pump instead of forcing in a ducted system.
  • What does the $75 diagnostic fee actually include, and what warranty comes with the work?
The $75 covers a full system evaluation: fault code pull from the control board, electrical measurements on the capacitor and contactor, combustion or refrigerant checks as relevant, and a written explanation of what I found and what it will cost to fix. If you approve the repair that same visit, the $75 drops off the invoice entirely. Completed repairs carry a one-year warranty on parts and labor. If the job is a full system installation rather than a repair, that warranty extends to ten years on both parts and labor.
