Tempstar in Atherton
Tempstar heating and cooling in Atherton.
Atherton sits close enough to the bay that outdoor units age faster than the homeowners expect. Salt-laden air off the estuary corrodes contactor terminals and capacitor housings in three to five years instead of eight to ten. The housing stock is a mix of large mid-century ranches and newer estate builds, most of them fully ducted. Tempstar ducted systems show up regularly here, typically the QuietComfort communicating two-stage or variable-speed heat pumps paired with a gas furnace for backup heat.
We diagnose Tempstar the same way we do its siblings under the Carrier umbrella. The communicating boards on the higher-tier variable-speed units store fault histories we pull before touching anything. We check the actual fault code first, verify supply voltage and static pressure, and confirm the refrigerant charge against the nameplate before we write a quote. On coastal-influenced installs like Atherton we also pull the contactor and capacitor as a matter of course because the oxidation we find is usually what pushed the system into fault in the first place.
Bay Area HVAC Service is our HVAC division, based out of San Ramon, EPA Section 608 Universal certified, CSLB 1136642. The diagnostic is $75 and we credit it back if you go ahead with the repair. Nothing gets touched until you have a written quote in hand. Repairs are covered by a one-year warranty. If we are replacing a system entirely, that installation carries ten years on parts and ten years on labor.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Condenser Capacitor and Contactor Failure. The outdoor units on Atherton properties corrode faster than in drier inland climates. Contactor contacts pit and weld partially, drawing excess current, and run capacitors lose microfarads well before their rated life. The system will short-cycle, start hard with a hum, or stop cooling entirely on warm afternoons. We test capacitance and contact resistance directly, swap both components when values are marginal, and torque the line-side connections where corrosion has crept under the lugs.
- Hot Surface Igniter Cracking on QuietComfort Furnaces. The silicon nitride igniters Tempstar uses in the QuietComfort line are the same part as Carrier and Heil, and they crack after a few seasons of thermal cycling. The furnace starts the ignition sequence, the draft inducer runs up, and then the board locks out because it never saw flame. The failure code is usually a three or four flash lockout depending on the board generation. We confirm the igniter resistance is open, replace the igniter, then verify the flame sensor signal clears above the lockout threshold before we call it done.
- Draft Inducer and Pressure Switch at End of Service Life. On furnaces that have been running ten or more years, the draft inducer motor bearings wear and the wheel picks up debris from a dirty filter, which loads the motor and drops inducer pressure. The pressure switch sees a borderline signal and intermittently refuses to close, so the furnace starts on cold mornings and then locks out midway through the heat call. We measure inducer suction at the switch port, check motor current draw, and inspect the wheel for buildup before recommending inducer replacement or a full heat exchanger inspection if the unit is old enough to warrant it.

FAQ
Tempstar in Atherton questions, answered.
-
Do you service Atherton, or is that too far from San Ramon?
We cover the Mid-Peninsula regularly. Atherton is a straightforward run out 680 to 92 or down the 101 corridor, and we schedule it the same as any Tri-Valley or Peninsula call. No travel surcharge for Atherton. -
Is Tempstar a good fit for the larger homes in Atherton, or should I be looking at a different brand?
Tempstar runs the same Carrier-engineered compressors, heat exchangers, and control boards as Heil and Comfortmaker. For a large ducted estate home the variable-speed communicating heat pump and a properly sized gas furnace backup is a capable combination. The tradeoff is the dealer network: Tempstar moves through independent contractors rather than the branded Carrier dealer channel, so parts availability and certified installers can be thinner. We stock the common failure parts and can source the rest through the same Carrier distribution chain, so that tradeoff matters less on service than it does the day you buy it. -
What does the $75 diagnostic fee actually include, and what warranty do I get on the repair?
The $75 covers a full system evaluation: we pull fault codes from the board, check electrical values at the unit, measure static pressure and refrigerant charge if the system is running, and identify the root cause rather than guessing. That fee comes off the repair total if you approve the work. The repair itself carries a one-year warranty on both parts and labor. If the diagnosis points to a system replacement instead, new installations carry a ten-year parts and ten-year labor warranty.
