Tempstar in Concord
Tempstar heating and cooling in Concord.
Concord runs hot. The inland position in the Diablo Valley means summer heat spikes that coastal Bay Area cities never see, and the older ranch-style tracts along Monument Boulevard and out toward Clayton Road have been running ducted gas furnaces and AC condensers for decades. A lot of that equipment is Tempstar, which found its way into this market through independent contractors who liked the price point. The units are solid Carrier-platform hardware, same sheet metal and controls as Heil or Comfortmaker, just with a different badge. After ten or fifteen summers here, the outdoor units show it.
When I work on a Tempstar in Concord, the first step is pulling codes off the control board or the communicating thermostat, not guessing by symptoms. The QuietComfort single-stage furnaces throw readable fault blinks; the variable-speed communicating systems log fault history I can scroll through. I do not swap parts until the diagnosis points at something specific. In the heat-pump models, I also check refrigerant charge before blaming anything mechanical, because a unit that spent years cooking in a south-facing backyard on the Monument corridor has often lost a small charge over time and the short-cycling that looks like a bad defrost board is actually just low suction pressure.
Bay Area HVAC Service runs out of San Ramon, which puts Concord well inside our regular service area. The diagnostic fee is $75 and we waive it when the repair moves forward. Before any work starts, you get a written quote. Our technicians hold EPA Section 608 Universal certification and we operate under CSLB license 1136642. Repairs carry a one-year warranty; if we install a new system the parts and labor warranty runs ten years.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Hot Surface Igniter Failure. The silicon nitride igniters on Tempstar gas furnaces are a known wear item, and Concord's summer-to-winter cycling accelerates the fatigue. The symptom is a no-heat call where the inducer runs, the pressure switch closes, but the burners never light and the board locks out after three attempts. I measure resistance across the igniter before condemning it. A cracked igniter sometimes reads in range cold but opens under load, so I watch the amp draw at startup. Replacement is straightforward once the diagnosis is confirmed.
- Flame Sensor Fouling and Nuisance Lockout. A dirty flame sensor is the most common reason a Tempstar furnace lights briefly and then shuts off within a second or two. The control board interprets the weak ionization signal as an unlit burner and kills the gas valve as a safety measure. On furnaces that have been running a few seasons without maintenance, carbon buildup on the sensor rod is usually the cause. Cleaning the rod with fine steel wool restores the signal in most cases; if the rod is pitted or the wire connector has corroded, I replace the sensor assembly.
- Capacitor and Contactor Wear on Outdoor Units. The condenser capacitors and contactors on Tempstar AC and heat-pump units take real punishment in Concord summers. A capacitor that is reading low on microfarads causes the compressor or fan motor to draw high amps on startup, which shortens motor life if it is left alone. The contactor pits from repeated arcing and eventually sticks or fails to pull in. Both parts are inexpensive relative to the labor, so when one is marginal I check the other at the same time and give the customer a single straight quote for what the unit actually needs.

FAQ
Tempstar in Concord questions, answered.
-
Do you actually come out to Concord, or is this a long drive from San Ramon?
Concord is a regular stop for us. San Ramon to Concord is a straightforward run out Highway 4 or through the Caldecott corridor, and we cover the whole Diablo Valley area routinely. You are not at the edge of our service area. -
Is a Tempstar system a reasonable fit for a Concord home, or should I be looking at a different brand?
For most of the ranch-era homes in Concord with existing ductwork, a Tempstar is a reasonable choice. The equipment is built on the same Carrier platform as brands that cost more, so the engineering is sound. The tradeoff is that the dealer network is thinner, which is why independent service like ours matters for long-term support. One thing I do confirm before any install here is duct condition, because undersized or leaky ducts in homes built before the 1980s waste a lot of what a modern variable-speed system is capable of. -
What does the $75 diagnostic actually cover, and what warranty do I get on the repair?
The $75 covers a full diagnostic call: I pull fault codes, check electrical, measure pressures or temperatures as the failure requires, and give you a written quote for the repair. If you go ahead with the work, the $75 comes off the bill entirely. Parts and labor on repairs are warrantied for one year. If it turns out you need a full system replacement instead, those installs carry a ten-year parts and ten-year labor warranty.
