Sub-Zero in Berkeley
Sub-Zero in Berkeley kitchens.
Sub-Zero lives in the Berkeley hills, not the flatlands. North Berkeley and the Berkeley Hills remodels across 94707 and 94708 run Sub-Zero columns and Classic built-ins behind custom panels, next to Wolf or Thermador ranges and Miele or Bosch dishwashers. A lot of those installs are 10 to 20 years old. South and West Berkeley apartments run GE, LG, and Samsung, so the Sub-Zero calls cluster up the hill.
At that vintage the two things we see most are condenser coils caking up and the dispenser quitting. The Classic 36 and 48 inch units pull air across a coil that blocks fast when a cabinet panel chokes the grille. Heat builds, the compressor runs long, and the fresh-food side drifts warm. On the older built-ins the ice dispenser dies while the water still runs. We confirm the dispenser control against the harness and switch before we order anything.
What the work looks like
A built-in sealed-system leak repair.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Condenser coil cleaning and fan-motor swap. Classic 36 and 48 inch units after a blocked grille. Pull the unit, brush and vac the coil, check fan bearings for drag.
- Dispenser control on older built-ins. Ice dead, water fine, lights normal. The control is often no longer stocked new, available rebuilt. We verify before ordering.
- Sealed-system leak on built-in units. Slow one-side warming. Recovery, leak repair, weigh-in, and a 24-hour vacuum so it holds.
- Door gasket and hinge service. Magnetic seal breaks and the unit runs constantly. Gasket replacement and cartridge adjustment to set the seal.

FAQ
Sub-Zero in Berkeley questions, answered.
-
How fast can you get to Berkeley for a Sub-Zero call?
Berkeley is on our Inner-East-Bay routed days, usually two or three a week from San Ramon, 35 to 50 minutes up. Booked windows get a written arrival time before we leave the shop. -
My Sub-Zero ice dispenser died but water still works. What is that?
On the older built-ins that is almost always the dispenser control. We test the harness and the dispenser switch first because they mimic the same symptom, then source the rebuilt part through a refurbisher we trust. -
The fresh-food side is warm but the freezer is cold. Is that the compressor?
Usually not the compressor. On hill-home Classic units it is most often a caked condenser coil or a tired condenser-fan motor making the unit run hot. We pull it, clean the coil, and check the fan before we ever talk sealed system.
