How often should a Manitowoc on Vallejo's hard water get a full descale?

Our Indigo NXT is showing a long-harvest code. Can we keep using it?

It will keep trying, but it is telling you the harvest is taking too long, usually from scale or a harvest valve problem. Running it that way strains the machine. Write down the code and the model number when you call so the likely parts are on the truck.

Our ice has a white crust around the edges. Is that the water or the machine?

Usually the water. A white crust is mineral left behind as the ice freezes, and on hard water it builds faster. A cleaning and a fresh filter clear most of it. If it comes back quickly, we check the water level and the dump cycle, since a machine that does not flush enough water concentrates the minerals.

Vallejo's water comes from Lake Berryessa and the State Water Project, and it runs hard. On a Manitowoc ice machine that shows up on the evaporator plate first. Scale builds a rough film, cubes grip the plate during harvest, and an Indigo NXT starts logging long harvests before it shuts itself down. The machine is protecting itself by stopping. The fix is to clear the scale and then keep it from coming back.

Common repairs we handle.

Harvest that hangs with ice stuck to the plate. Ice forms on the evaporator but will not drop. On hard water the usual causes are scale on the plate, a harvest valve that is not opening, or a water curtain switch that never signals the drop. We descale and sanitize the evaporator, test the harvest valve coil and the curtain switch, and watch a full harvest before we close the panel.
Water filter spent well before its printed interval. Filter cartridges often list a twelve-month interval. On Vallejo water we suggest changing them every six. A clogged filter starves the water system, cubes come out thin, and the machine runs longer to fill the bin. We replace the cartridge and write the next change date inside the panel.
Scaled water inlet or dump valve. Hard water leaves mineral in the small passages of the inlet and dump valves. A valve that dribbles or sticks open throws off the fill, and the machine either freezes up or makes shallow cubes. We clean or replace the valve and check the water level in the trough on the next cycle.
