Yes, more than most people expect. Condenser fins and door hinges are exposed metal, and salt in the air corrodes them faster here than fifteen minutes inland. The heavy, damp fog that sits over Half Moon Bay and up through Montara and Moss Beach most mornings pushes extra moisture into the fridge every time the door opens, and the defrost drain on older Kenmores ices over faster out here than it would inland. Water pools under the crisper or the freezer walls frost up between cycles, and I clear the drain and check the defrost heater together since one usually caused the other.
Start relay failure on older Whirlpool-built 106 units in coastal cottages. A lot of the smaller cottages and older homes from El Granada down through the Coastside still run Whirlpool-built 106-series Kenmores, and the start relay is the part salt air and age get to first. The compressor clicks and cuts out repeatedly instead of running, and I meter the windings before replacing the relay so we know the compressor itself is still good.
