Follett in Albany
Follett commercial service.
Albany packs a dense run of small restaurants and cafes into 1.8 square miles, most of them along Solano Avenue, the strip Albany shares with North Berkeley, with a second cluster where San Pablo Avenue crosses through town. Volume here swings with the academic calendar since UC Village and the university family housing along Buchanan Street sit right in town, quieter in August, busier when students and families are back for the school year, and a Follett Horizon unit that coasted through a slow stretch can get pushed hard once things pick back up.
Albany's older commercial spaces, especially the smaller storefronts along Solano and San Pablo, often have tight mechanical closets with limited airflow, which stresses the condenser side of these machines regardless of how clean the coil is. CSLB license #1136642 covers our commercial work here, and our technicians hold EPA Section 608 certification for handling refrigerant. Anything past the ice machine itself, on the broader refrigeration side, we hand off to Bay Area Refrigeration Service, our commercial division.

Common repairs we handle.
- Condenser Coil Fouling and Capacitor Failure. A cramped mechanical closet that stays shut most of the day traps heat around the condenser even on a coil that looks clean, pushing head pressure and amp draw up cycle after cycle. That extra stress hits the run capacitor first, and it typically fails well before the compressor ever does. I check closet airflow and clearance on every Albany call, not just coil condition.
- Water Inlet or Drain Blockage. A restricted water inlet or a slow drain shows up on the Horizon display as a low production alarm, and during a busy Solano Avenue dinner rush that alarm means a cafe or restaurant running out of ice mid-service. I trace the water path end to end before opening the refrigeration side, since that's usually the faster fix.
- Auger Motor and Gearbox Wear. Cafes running steady volume through the school year, with UC Village families and Solano Avenue foot traffic both feeding the counter, put more cycles on the auger motor and gearbox than a quieter operation sees in a year. If a machine sounds normal while it's running but the bin just isn't filling, I check the auger's amp draw under load before I quote anything on the compressor side.

FAQ
Follett in Albany questions, answered.
-
How long does it take you to reach Albany from San Ramon?
Figure roughly 40 to 45 minutes from the shop, up I-580 or Highway 24 to I-80. We route Albany with our Berkeley and Richmond Inner East Bay days, so if we've got a call in either of those cities the same day we can often chain the route and get to you faster. Booked calls get a written arrival time. -
Does the $99 diagnostic charge get added on top of the repair price?
Approve the repair and the $99 diagnostic charge is credited toward the repair. That charge only stands alone if you decide not to go ahead once we've found the problem. -
How do you source parts for older Follett units?
We confirm the required part and repair timing after diagnosis. We source the matching part and include the lead time in the written estimate.
