Comfortmaker in Moraga

Comfortmaker heating and cooling in Moraga.

Moraga sits in a bowl between the hills, and that geography shapes the HVAC work here. The older Rheem Road and Canyon Road neighborhoods have mid-century and 1970s ranches with original ducted systems, often Carrier-platform furnaces and split AC units that have been cycling through hot valley summers for decades. Comfortmaker landed in a lot of these houses through contractor installs in the 2000s and early 2010s, and we see them regularly. The inland Diablo Valley heat hits Moraga hard in July and August, so when a condenser capacitor fails or a heat pump drops out of cooling mode, it is not a minor inconvenience.

Comfortmaker shares its control board, igniter, inducer motor, and gas valve with Carrier and Bryant equipment, which means I am not guessing at the diagnostics. I pull fault codes off the board, check the flame sensor for carbon buildup before condemning any part, and test the pressure switch differential before calling the inducer gone. On the cooling side I check the capacitor with a capacitance meter and inspect the contactor contacts for pitting, not only amp draw. SoftSound furnaces in Moraga homes sometimes develop blower resonance after the cabinet is disturbed by duct cleaning or filter changes, and that is usually a loose panel or mounting bracket rather than a motor fault.

Bay Area HVAC Service runs out of our San Ramon base and covers Moraga without a travel surcharge. The diagnostic is $75 and we waive it if the repair goes forward. Every job starts with a written quote, nothing starts without your sign-off. We are EPA Section 608 Universal certified and hold CSLB license 1136642. New installs carry a 10-year parts and 10-year labor warranty. Repair work is backed by a 1-year warranty on the parts and labor we touch.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Cracked or Failed Hot Surface Igniter. The silicon nitride igniter on Comfortmaker furnaces is the most common no-heat call we take. The unit attempts a light cycle, the inducer spins up, but the igniter never glows because it has cracked from thermal fatigue. On older SoftSound units the igniter sits close to the burner shield and the heat cycling is aggressive. We verify the crack visually and confirm with a resistance check, then replace with an OEM-spec part and run a full ignition sequence before closing up.
  • Flame Sensor Carboned Over and Short-Cycling. A dirty flame sensor will let the burner light, then shut it down within a few seconds because the sensor can no longer pass sufficient microamp current to the control board. The board logs this as a flame-loss fault and the furnace goes through two or three retry cycles before locking out. In Moraga homes that run the furnace hard through the inland cool-season evenings, we see this sensor carboned over every few years. We clean or replace the sensor, run the full startup sequence, and measure current to confirm the reading is solid.
  • Condenser Capacitor and Contactor Failure in Summer Heat. Moraga summers push outdoor units hard, and the run capacitor on Comfortmaker condensers is often the first component to drop out of spec before it fails outright. A weak capacitor shows up as slow compressor startup, high amp draw, or a unit that trips its breaker on hot afternoons. We test capacitance before condemning it. While we are out there we inspect the contactor for pitted or burned contacts, because a failing contactor on a hard-starting compressor will take the capacitor with it repeatedly if it is not caught at the same visit.

FAQ

Comfortmaker in Moraga questions, answered.

  • Do you actually come out to Moraga, or is this just a listing?
We come out regularly. Our base is San Ramon, and Moraga is a straight shot up Crow Canyon and over the hills, roughly 20 to 25 minutes depending on traffic on 24. There is no extra travel fee for Moraga calls. We schedule morning or afternoon windows and give you a call when we are on the way.
  • Is Comfortmaker equipment a reasonable fit for houses in Moraga?
For most Moraga homes, yes. The mid-century ranches on the canyon streets have existing duct systems and a standard split configuration works well. Comfortmaker sits on the same Carrier platform as Heil and Tempstar, so the components are proven and service parts are not hard to source. Where it gets more interesting is in older homes on the hillside lots with no existing ductwork, where a ductless heat pump is a better conversation. Either way, if you are replacing equipment we will tell you what actually fits the house and confirm any available rebates at the estimate, not upfront with a number that may not apply to your situation.
  • What does the $75 diagnostic include, and what warranty covers the repair?
The $75 covers a full diagnosis: I pull fault codes, test the components involved, and identify the root cause. I then give you a written quote for the repair before anything gets opened up. If you approve the work and we do it that day, the $75 is waived against the repair total. Parts and labor on the repair carry a 1-year warranty. If a new install comes out of the conversation instead, that work carries a 10-year parts and 10-year labor warranty.
