Comfortmaker in Lafayette
Comfortmaker heating and cooling in Lafayette.
Lafayette sits at the inland edge of the East Bay hills, and the climate shows in the equipment I see. Summers in the Acalanes corridor run well into the 90s, so the AC condenser and heat pump outdoor units here work long seasons. Most of the housing stock is mid-century ranch and split-level on slab or raised foundation, ducted throughout, and Comfortmaker shows up regularly in that bracket because it was contractor-installed when someone wanted Carrier-platform quality at a tighter bid price. The SoftSound furnace line went into a lot of those jobs over the past decade.
Comfortmaker shares its control board, igniter, HSI, inducer assembly, and gas valve with Carrier and Bryant, so I read the fault codes off the board the same way and know exactly where the failure points are on a given model year. I do not swap parts to see what happens. A short-cycling furnace gets flame sensor resistance checked, combustion analyzed, and the pressure switch verified against inducer vacuum before I hand you a quote. On the cooling side, I check capacitor and contactor condition at every visit because the Lafayette summer runtime is long enough to age them fast.
Bay Area HVAC Service covers Lafayette out of our San Ramon base, usually same day or next day. The diagnostic fee is $75 and we waive it if you move ahead with the repair. You get a written, itemized quote before any wrench turns. I carry EPA Section 608 Universal certification and operate under CSLB license 1136642. Repair work carries a 1-year parts and labor warranty. If a new install comes out of the conversation, those jobs are backed by a 10-year parts and 10-year labor warranty, and we confirm whatever utility or manufacturer rebates are currently paying at estimate time.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Cracked or failed HSI igniter. The hot surface igniter on Comfortmaker 80 and 96 percent furnaces is the same silicon nitride part used across the Carrier family, and it cracks after repeated thermal cycling. The furnace calls for heat, the draft inducer starts, and then nothing ignites. The board logs a no-ignition lockout and the unit shuts off after two or three tries. I confirm with a resistance check, replace the igniter, and verify flame is established within the ignition trial window before closing the job.
- Flame sensor carboned over, causing short-cycling. In Lafayette homes where the furnace runs hard through December and January, the flame sensor rod picks up a carbon layer that increases resistance and tells the board there is no flame even when combustion is stable. The result is a furnace that lights, runs for a few seconds, and shuts back down on a repeat loop. I clean the sensor rod, check microamp draw to confirm it is back in spec, and inspect the burner for any contributing contamination before returning the system to service.
- Condenser capacitor or contactor failure during summer. The run capacitor and contactor on Comfortmaker AC and heat pump condensers are the wear items that go first after several long-season summers in the Diablo Valley heat. A weak capacitor causes the compressor or fan motor to struggle on startup, sometimes drawing enough current to trip the breaker. A pitted contactor may not close reliably or may weld shut and keep the unit running after the call for cooling ends. I test capacitance and contactor coil resistance, replace the failed component, and verify operating pressures before the call is done.

FAQ
Comfortmaker in Lafayette questions, answered.
-
Do you actually come out to Lafayette, or is that too far from San Ramon?
Lafayette is a straightforward drive from our San Ramon base, usually 25 to 30 minutes depending on traffic on 680. We cover the full Diablo Valley regularly and Lafayette is well within our normal service area. Call in the morning and we can usually get out the same or next day. -
Is Comfortmaker a decent fit for the type of homes in Lafayette?
For the mid-century ranch and two-story tract homes that make up most of Lafayette's residential stock, yes. Comfortmaker runs on Carrier's platform, so the equipment is well-proven and parts are easy to source. Where it makes sense is a full ducted replacement where the buy decision is mostly about install quality and price rather than brand prestige. On older properties in the hills with no existing duct work, I would steer that conversation toward ductless before quoting a Comfortmaker ducted system. -
What does the $75 diagnostic actually cover, and what warranty do repairs carry?
The $75 covers a full diagnostic: I pull fault codes, test the components in question, and identify the root cause. I then give you a written quote for the repair. If you approve the work, the $75 is waived entirely off the invoice. Parts and labor on the repair are warranted for one year. If the diagnosis leads to a new equipment install instead, that work is covered by a 10-year parts warranty and a 10-year labor warranty.
