We set a time with you and meet you at the building entrance or your door. The machine goes to our bench for diagnosis, you get the written quote, and after the repair we bring it back to the same place.

Can you fix a Breville that fell off the counter?

Often. A fall can crack the water tank, the drip tray or the case, knock a hose loose inside, or bend the portafilter. Unplug it and do not run it until it has been checked. On the bench we open it, test it, and quote the cracked or loose parts.

The pump on my Barista machine sounds louder than it used to. Should I worry?

Vibration pumps are always noisy, but a new rattle, or a pump that labors while little water comes out, points to scale, a blocked inlet or wear. Stop using it if water stops flowing, since running a pump dry damages it. The bench check measures flow and pressure before it gets worse.

San Pablo sits on the flat ground between the north end of the Berkeley Hills and San Pablo Bay. Much of its housing was built from the 1940s through the 1960s, and apartments and row houses stand alongside the single-family homes. We pick up Breville machines from any of them, from San Pablo East to the blocks near Rumrill Boulevard, and bring them to our bench.

On the Barista line and the Bambino, milk does more damage than water. If the wand is not purged and wiped after each pitcher, milk dries inside the tip and the tube, and the steam turns weak and sputtering. EBMUD water is soft to moderate, so scale builds slowly here. On a San Pablo machine we check the milk path and the steam valve before we open the heater.

What we repair on the bench.

Weak, sputtering steam on a Barista machine. Dried milk narrows the holes in the steam tip and coats the inside of the wand. We soak and clear the tip, clean the wand tube, and test the steam valve for a leak that bleeds pressure. If the heater is not reaching steam temperature, its thermostat is next.
Thin shots and low pressure on the Barista line. We rule out the simple causes first: a grind that is too coarse, a worn basket, a clogged shower screen. Then we put a gauge on the group and read the pump pressure. A pump that has lost output gets replaced, and a valve that bleeds pressure back to the tank gets cleaned or swapped.
Puddle under the machine after brewing. Water under a Barista machine can come from a drip tray that overflowed, a worn group gasket that lets water run down the front, or a split hose inside. We run the machine open on the bench to find the wet spot and replace only what leaks.
