Problem: A Martinez office break room called in with their Eversys Shotmaster down. The touchscreen kept showing “Bean hopper left is empty or locked. Please refill or unlock the bean hopper. (Left)” even though the left hopper was full of beans. With that message up, the machine wouldn’t let anyone pull a drink, so the whole break room was stuck on the right side only.
Diagnostics: I started the visit with the usual $75 diagnostic, which we waive if you go ahead with the repair. Beans were clearly in the hopper, so the message didn’t add up. I pulled the left hopper and looked at the outlet. Oily fines from the beans had packed into the throat and built up over the level sensor, so the sensor was reading empty or locked when it wasn’t. This is a pretty common one with darker, oilier roasts. Nothing was broken. It was just gunked up.
Solution: I gave the customer a written quote before touching anything else. Then I removed and cleaned the left hopper, cleared the residue out of the throat and outlet, and wiped down the level sensor so it could actually see the beans. Reseated everything, made sure it was seated square, and cleared the fault. To be straight about it, this job was mostly cleaning and maintenance, not a parts swap.
Result: Both hoppers read correctly again. I ran test shots off the left side to confirm the sensor stayed happy under real use, and the machine went back to normal service. I also showed the staff how to keep the hopper throat clean so it doesn’t bridge up again with their roast.
