Pacifica sits right on the coast, and homes in Linda Mar and Sharp Park catch the marine air straight off the water most of the year. That air is harder on a Breville than people expect. It is not just the exterior finish that takes the hit, the exposed metal on the wand tip, the portafilter basket, and the switch contacts inside the housing all corrode faster here than they do twenty minutes inland.

I see pitting and light rust on steam wand tips and portafilter baskets in Pacifica that I would not expect to see for years on a machine in, say, San Ramon. Left alone, that corrosion narrows the steam path and roughens the basket surface enough to change how a shot pulls. It's a slower failure than scale, but it adds up the same way.

Corroded steam wand tip from coastal air. Salt-laden air pits the small holes in a steam wand tip faster near the coast, and a pitted tip sprays unevenly or clogs sooner than it should. I replace the tip when it's pitted rather than trying to clean out corrosion that has already eaten into the metal, since a cleaned-but-pitted tip just fails again in a few months.
Portafilter basket rust and rough shots. The stainless basket in a portafilter is usually the last thing anyone thinks about, but in Pacifica I see baskets with surface rust and rough spots well before they would show wear inland. A rusted basket roughens the puck surface and can throw off extraction evenly across the bed. Swapping the basket is a cheap fix compared to chasing a shot problem that was never about the grind.
Scaled boiler on top of the salt air wear. Pacifica doesn't skip the standard Breville scale problem either. The Dual Boiler and Oracle still scale up from Peninsula water same as anywhere else on this route, so a slow heat-up or a weak group temperature gets the same descale treatment here that it would in any other city. I check both issues on a Pacifica machine, the corrosion and the scale, since they usually show up together.
