Yes. A bench check on a used Oracle covers pump pressure, temperature on both boilers, the grinder and burrs, the tamping fan and the milk wand, plus a look for scale and slow leaks. You get a written list of what is worn and a quote for anything worth doing now.

Hercules water is soft. Do we still need to descale?

Yes, less often. Soft to moderate EBMUD water still leaves some minerals in a boiler that heats every morning. Follow the descale interval in the manual and change the tank filter on time. If the machine is slow to heat or the steam weakens, descale sooner.

Should we empty the hopper and the tank before pickup?

Please do. Run the grinder until the hopper is empty, pour out the water tank and empty the drip tray. Loose beans and water sloshing around in transit make a mess inside the case. Send the portafilter along with the machine so we can test it as you use it.

Hercules sits on San Pablo Bay with Interstate 80 running through it. Inland, along Refugio Valley Road, are the 1970s and 1980s subdivisions locals know as the Birds, the Gemstones and the Astronauts. Newer homes went up in places like Victoria by the Bay and around the Waterfront. We pick up Breville espresso machines from all of it and bring them to our bench.

EBMUD water here is soft to moderate, so scale builds more slowly than on harder water. On an Oracle or Oracle Touch, that puts the grinder and the milk system near the top of the list: burrs worn down or clogged with oil, a dose that drifts, a wand crusted with dried milk. We still check both boilers, but we start with the parts that wear from use.

What we repair on the bench.

Oracle dose drifts and the puck comes out uneven. The Oracle grinds and tamps for you, so a clogged chute or worn burrs show up as a puck that is light, lopsided or wet. We clear the chute and grind path, check the burrs, and test the tamping fan and its motor. Then we weigh several doses against the setting before the machine goes home.
Auto milk wand that stops at the wrong temperature. The Oracle wand reads milk temperature through a sensor near the tip, and dried milk over it throws off the automatic stop. We clear the wand and tip, test the sensor and the steam valve, and texture a pitcher of milk to confirm it stops where it is set.
Oracle Touch error that points at the wrong part. An error on the Oracle Touch display names a symptom, not a failed board. More often the cause is a sensor, a thermostat, a pump or a connector that worked loose. We trace it on the bench and quote a board only after the cheaper parts test good.
