A machine crammed into a condo cabinet without space for heat to escape runs its heating element and thermostat harder than the same machine sitting in the open. I see early element and thermostat failures on Foster City machines that are otherwise well maintained, simply from where they live. I replace the failed part and, where I can, suggest a small change in placement to keep the next one from going the same way.
Scaled boiler from Peninsula water. Foster City draws on the same moderately hard Peninsula water as the rest of this stretch of the Bay, and the Dual Boiler and Oracle scale up inside the same way. Long heat-up times and a group that runs cool by the end of a shot point to mineral buildup in the boiler and group circuit. I descale the full path and confirm recovery time and group temperature before I finish.
Grinder dose drifting on the Oracle. The built-in grinder on the Oracle and Oracle Touch cakes with coffee oil over regular use, and the dose that reaches the portafilter starts drifting from what the display shows. In a townhome kitchen where the same machine runs the same routine every morning, that drift tends to show up as a shot that's slowly gotten worse without anyone changing a setting. I clean the grind path, check burr wear, and reset the dose against an actual measurement.
