Our Emerald Hills kitchen has a Bertazzoni all-gas range. Why does the oven smell of gas for a moment when it lights?

A brief whiff at ignition is normal on a gas oven, because a little gas flows before the flame catches. A smell that lasts, or a loud pop when the oven lights, points to a weak igniter that is slow to open the valve. Turn the oven off and have it tested before using it again.

Our induction cooktop hums when a pan is on it. Is that a fault?

Usually not. Induction coils make a light hum or buzz with some pans, more at high power and with layered or lightweight cookware. A grinding or rattling sound is different. That usually comes from the cooling fan, which we can clean or replace.

A panel that ignores your finger is often a control lock, moisture on the glass, or a ribbon cable that worked loose, and all three cost less than a new board. Our technician checks them in that order. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair when you go ahead, and nothing starts until you approve the written quote.

Induction touch panel that ignores every press. We rule out the control lock and dry the glass first. If the panel is still dead, we open the cooktop and check the ribbon cable and the connectors at the control board, then measure power at the board before deciding whether it needs replacing.
Electric oven that climbs well past the set temperature. An oven that overshoots by 40 degrees or more and keeps cycling high points to a temperature sensor out of range or a relay on the board that sticks closed. We check the sensor's resistance, watch the relay under load, and replace the part that misbehaves.
Recirculating hood that no longer clears cooking smells. In a condo where the hood cannot vent outside, air passes through charcoal filters and back into the room. When smells linger, the charcoal is usually spent or the blower has weakened. We check the blower speed, the grease filters and the charcoal, and tell you which one needs replacing.
