Depends how far it's gone. A coil that's just starting to pit can sometimes be cleaned and monitored. Once the fins are eaten through, cleaning won't bring back the airflow, and I'll tell you straight that a coil replacement is the honest fix rather than have you pay to wash something that won't hold.

Is there anything we can do to keep the salt air from wrecking the unit again?

A rinse-down of the coil with fresh water on a regular schedule slows the corrosion a lot. I'd also have someone check the door hardware every few months for surface rust before it gets bad enough to throw the door out of true. It's cheap maintenance against a repair that isn't.

Half Moon Bay is the anchor for the whole Coastside, and we cover the smaller towns strung along Highway 1 around it too, Montara, Moss Beach, and El Granada. The Atosa units I service are behind the counters on Main Street and down at the harbor, in the chowder houses and fish shacks around Pillar Point where a lot of covers move through a small kitchen.

The coast adds a failure mode I don't deal with much on the other side of the hill. Salt air corrodes condenser coil fins over time, and once the fins start eating away, airflow drops and head pressure climbs the same way it would from a dirty coil, except washing it doesn't fix corrosion damage. Door hinges and latch hardware rust out faster here too, and a rusted hinge lets the door hang just enough off true that the gasket stops sealing even though the gasket itself is fine.

These units run R290 propane refrigerant, so sealed-system work needs a hydrocarbon license same as anywhere else in the Atosa lineup. Getting a licensed tech out to the coast has been the harder part historically. That's less true now that we keep a technician on the Peninsula side.

Door hinge and hardware corrosion. Rusted hinges let the door sit slightly off true, and the gasket stops sealing even when the gasket itself is still good. We replace the hardware and true up the door swing.
R290 sealed-system leak diagnosis. Propane refrigerant, hydrocarbon-licensed work only. We recover the charge, locate the leak, and document it in writing.
