Sub-Zero wine storage has gone through three code systems, and the same symptom shows up differently on each. Find your model below. Model and serial number are on the rating plate.
- Integrated Wine (IW): IW-18, IW-24, IW-30, IW-30R. Three-part codes with a severity level. Source: Integrated Wine (IW) Series Technical Service Manual (7040158, Revision B, June 2015).
- Wine Storage (WS): WS-30, WS-30A. Two-digit codes. Source: Wine Storage (WS) Series Technical Service Manual (7013423, Revision A, April 2009).
- 400 Series: 427R, 424G, 424HAG, 424S, 424FS, 427G, 427RG, 430G, 430HAG, 430S. Display indicators, no numbered list in the manual. Source: 400 Series Technical Service/Training Manual (part #3756394).
For built-in refrigerators and freezers, see the Sub-Zero error codes hub.
If the unit smells burned, trips its breaker or is leaking water, stop and book service. Don’t open panels, test wiring or touch the refrigerant circuit.
Owner steps for every wine unit
These are from Sub-Zero’s Wine Storage Use and Care Guide (7031790 Rev. B, 6/2015) and Designer Wine (IW) Use and Care Guide (9012128 Rev. E, 6/2019):
- If SERVICE (or the service icon) is flashing, verify the condenser is clean. Then turn the unit off at the control panel and back on. If it keeps flashing, contact service.
- Verify the unit has power and the home circuit breaker is on.
- Make sure the door closes fully and hasn’t been left ajar.
- If the display shows 45° and 55° but the unit isn’t cooling, it may be in showroom mode. Call Sub-Zero Customer Care at 800-222-7820.
Clean the condenser with the power off at the control panel, gloves on, using a soft brush and a vacuum along the fins.
WS Series codes
On WS units, a warm temperature alarm (a compartment stays warm through several maximum run cycles) or a cold temperature alarm (a compartment stays below 38°F, 3°C, too long) flashes SERVICE, logs a code and cuts power to the compressor and condenser fan (Sub-Zero Wine Storage (WS) Series Technical Service Manual, 7013423, Revision A, April 2009, page 3-14). A thermistor fault shows EE in the matching temperature window with SERVICE flashing, or SERVICE alone for an evaporator thermistor. The manual clears a temperature alarm with the UNIT ON/OFF key once the problem is corrected.
From the WS Error Code Table, page 3-17:
| Code | What the manual says |
|---|---|
| 05 | Upper Cabinet Thermistor read open or shorted for 10+ seconds, or repeatedly read erratic temp’s |
| 06 | Upper Evaporator Thermistor read open or shorted for 10+ seconds, or repeatedly read erratic temp’s |
| 07 | Lower Cabinet Thermistor read open or shorted for 10+ seconds, or repeatedly read erratic temp’s |
| 08 | Lower Evaporator Thermistor read open or shorted for 10+ seconds, or repeatedly read erratic temp’s |
| 10 | Upper Cabinet Warm Temperature alarm |
| 11 | Upper Cabinet Cold Temperature alarm |
| 12 | Lower Cabinet Warm Temperature alarm |
| 13 | Lower Cabinet Cold Temperature alarm |
| 15 | Sealed System Fault (evap temperature cannot drop 5° in 5 minutes, 3 consecutive valve activations) |
400 Series indicators
The 400 Series manual doesn’t use numbered codes on the display. It describes these indicators (Sub-Zero 400 Series Technical Service/Training Manual, part #3756394, pages 3-16 to 3-17):
- Warm temperature alarm. A compartment stays too warm through several consecutive maximum run cycles. You see warm readings and SERVICE flashing. Power to the compressor, condenser fan, refrigerant valves, lights and evaporator fans is cut.
- Cold temperature alarm. A compartment goes below 38°F and stays there too long. SERVICE flashes and the same components are shut off.
- EE flashing in a temperature window. That compartment’s thermistor has a fault. SERVICE flashes too.
- SERVICE flashing alone. An evaporator thermistor fault.
If the bell alarm is turned on, BELL ON also flashes and the alarm beeps. The 427R’s refrigerator section has its own separate control, covered separately in the manual.
IW Series codes
IW codes follow Sub-Zero’s three-part format: system, zone, failure. Severity decides what you see. From page 6-2 of the IW manual:
| Severity | What the manual says |
|---|---|
| 1 | Error is logged and only readable through service menu, no indication to user, no chime |
| 2 | Splash screen with wrench and error code for ten (10) seconds to user upon door opening, error logged in service and user menu. No chime |
| 3 | Wrench and error code steady on screen to user upon door opening, error logged in service and user menu, No chime |
| 4 | Wrench and error code steady on screen to user upon door opening, error logged in service and user menu, with chime when door open |
| 5 | Wrench and error code steady on screen to user upon door opening, error logged in service and user menu, with chime when door closed |
The IW manual says the settings screen can display filter life, software versions, error codes and serial numbers (page 2-9). Clearing is a service step done after the repair.

Photograph the display, write down what each zone reads, and save the model and serial number. Don’t clear anything.
