Sub-Zero undercounter SERVICE flashing: what to check

A flashing SERVICE message on a Sub-Zero UC undercounter refrigerator needs model-specific checks. Learn what to record before arranging diagnosis.

By

A flashing SERVICE message on a Sub-Zero undercounter unit does not give you a part number to order. The UC use-and-care guide starts with the condenser and a control-panel power cycle. If it still flashes after that, the unit needs a technician to find out why. If it’s still under Sub-Zero’s warranty, call Sub-Zero first. Out of warranty, call us.

This guide concerns the UC-24 undercounter models described in Sub-Zero Undercounter Refrigeration Use & Care. The display patterns below use technical manual 7031931, Revision A, June 2014, for the series starting with serial number 3603000. It is not a code chart for Designer undercounter drawers, BI refrigerators or wine storage. Check the model on your paperwork before applying it.

Photograph EE, SERVICE or the double dashes

The use-and-care guide, PDF page 4, says a flashing SERVICE indicator can flag a temperature problem or a condenser that needs cleaning. On the UC-24 series covered by service manual 7031931, PDF page 31 distinguishes these ordinary display patterns:

  • EE on the left with SERVICE flashing: a freezer-compartment thermistor or its wiring has a fault.
  • EE on the right with SERVICE flashing: a refrigerator-compartment thermistor or its wiring has a fault.
  • SERVICE flashing without EE: the chart includes an evaporator thermistor or wiring fault. It also lists repeated full-duty running periods in which the zone fails to cool sufficiently, with no door opening during the last such period.
  • SERVICE steady rather than flashing: error codes were viewed in diagnostic mode but have not been cleared.
  • Two dashes: model configuration was not performed.

These patterns are reasons to record the display and arrange checks. They are not instructions to enter diagnostic mode, clear codes or change the model configuration. Include which side shows EE: the side changes the meaning.

SERVICE flashes, but the unit still runs

On PDF page 8, the manufacturer’s first check is whether the condenser is clean. The next is to turn the unit off with POWER, then turn it on again. If SERVICE keeps flashing after one power cycle, stop there and book a diagnosis. Photograph the warning before that single check so you can show us the original display.

The same guide puts condenser cleaning behind the kickplate, on PDF page 7. It requires power off at the control panel and gloves because the fins are sharp. If you cannot safely reach and identify the condenser, leave the cleaning for the visit. Do not reach into a running unit or remove other panels.

Warm cabinet, frost or lights that have gone out

These observations help separate the complaint. PDF page 8 lists a door left ajar, a door that does not close properly and torn gaskets among checks for frost or condensation. For high temperatures or long running, it also mentions a dirty condenser, warmer surroundings and possible showroom mode. Don’t try button sequences from the internet to rule it out; mention it when you book.

Lights out can have a different explanation: the guide says a door left ajar can disable the lights to limit heat. Closing the door for an hour is its check for that particular condition. It does not establish that the refrigerator is cooling correctly. Tell us separately what the temperature display shows and what you have observed inside.

Don’t use a cooling complaint as a reason to keep resetting SERVICE. Record whether the message returns immediately or after the cabinet runs for a while. No need to reproduce the fault if you already have that information.

A diagnosis before a repair quote

Out of warranty, send the UC model, the display photo and whether the door closes normally through our contact page. Our Sub-Zero repair service is independent. The diagnostic visit is $99 total, including diagnosis of additional units during the same visit. There is no extra diagnostic charge for additional units. The diagnostic is credited toward the repair.

For numbered EC entries, including UC-24 coverage, use the Sub-Zero code reference. A persistent UC warning needs its own diagnosis, not a replacement board chosen from another series.
