Frost on a surface can be a clue to a door, airflow, or defrost condition. It is not a reason to scrape the surface. Take a photo and let the technician see the pattern before it changes.

Harvest and delivery observations

The ice maker must form ice, release it, and move it toward the bin. Record which stage appears to fail. If cubes form but remain in place, say that. If the bin receives ice but the dispenser does not deliver it, treat that as a different complaint. If the bin is full or the shutoff arm is in a normal stop position, record that too.

Do not reach into the ice-making mechanism while it is powered. Do not bend a shutoff arm, bypass a bin switch, or run a forced harvest without the model-specific procedure. A forced action may hide a control problem or damage a small mechanism.

What a technician checks

An in-person diagnosis can compare freezer temperature, water delivery, ice-maker movement, bin signals, airflow, wiring, and control behavior. If the freezer itself is warm, the technician can follow the cooling evidence instead of treating the ice maker as an isolated part. If the freezer is normal, the water and harvest path can be tested more directly.

The written estimate should connect the findings to the proposed work. It should not turn an empty ice bin into a guessed part list. A diagnostic visit is also the right time to explain whether a filter or operating condition is separate from a repair recommendation.

A better ice-making record

Write the ice history in order: last normal production, first change, current bin condition, and any setting or power event. If the freezer is also warm, include that before discussing the ice maker. If the freezer is normal but the bin is empty, note whether you heard a fill, freeze, or harvest attempt.

Do not describe a small cube as proof of low refrigerant. Water delivery, freezer temperature, airflow, a mold condition, and controls can all affect the result. The value of the record is that it helps the technician choose what to test first.

Keep the filter information and model number available. A filter may be relevant to water flow, while the actual repair could be elsewhere. The same disciplined note helps with a full bin that will not dispense, because storage and delivery are not the same as ice production.

Safety before opening anything

Do not open electrical panels, pierce refrigerant lines, connect gauges, bypass a control, or work near a fan. Refrigerant and electrical tests are technician work. If you find a water leak near wiring, smell burning, or hear an abnormal motor noise, stop using the affected function and keep the area clear.
