Range hood repair costs swing hard because “it stopped working” can mean five different problems, and they’re not close to the same price. A dirty filter or a stuck damper might barely cost you anything. A blower motor, a control board, or a duct packed with grease is a bigger job: more parts, more labor, sometimes a wait on the right motor for your specific hood. What Actually Drives the Estimate
Nationally, you’ll typically see range hood repairs quoted anywhere from around $100 for a simple part to $500 or more for a motor or control board. That’s a wide range, and it’s wide for a reason. The same complaint, hood won’t turn on, hood’s not pulling smoke, can have a cheap fix behind it or an expensive one, and there’s no way to know which until someone’s actually looked at it. Here’s roughly how it breaks down, most common and cheapest first.
Grease filter and general buildup. This is the most common call we get, and often the least expensive, sometimes it’s not even a repair, just a filter that needed cleaning or swapping months ago. Mesh filters degrease fine in the sink or dishwasher. Charcoal filters on recirculating hoods can’t be cleaned, only replaced.
Switches, lights, and low-voltage controls. A bad rocker switch, a failed light socket, a loose connector behind the control panel. Parts are cheap. Labor is quick once the actual fault is found, and finding it is the part that takes time.
Blower motor and capacitor. This is where cost usually starts climbing. Motors aren’t a universal part, they get sourced by brand and often by model, and pulling the housing apart to reach one takes real labor. A motor that hums but won’t spin is often just a bad capacitor, cheaper than a full motor, but you still need it tested before you know which one you’re buying.
Control boards. Newer hoods with touch panels or variable-speed electronics carry pricier boards, and before ordering one, a tech has to confirm it’s actually the board and not a sensor, a wire, or a bad connection feeding it. Boards aren’t a part you want to guess on.
Duct-side issues and access. This is separate from the hood itself, and it’s the piece people forget to price in. A stuck exterior damper, a crushed transition, grease built up inside the duct run, all of that adds labor even when the hood’s own electronics are fine. So does a hood mounted over an island, or tucked under cabinetry that has to come apart to reach the motor. None of that shows up in a price quoted over the phone.
How a Tech Actually Diagnoses It
A real diagnostic starts at the switch: is power getting to the unit at all, and is it consistent across every speed setting. From there a tech checks motor draw with a meter. Current flowing but nothing spinning points to a bad capacitor or a seized bearing. No draw at all points somewhere else, a dead winding, a tripped breaker, or a wiring fault upstream. Then it’s outside to the termination cap and damper, checking that the flap opens freely and the vent isn’t blocked, plus a look inside the duct collar for grease buildup choking airflow even though the motor’s fine. Whatever’s left after that, an intermittent fault, an error light, a board that won’t respond, is where the diagnosis gets more involved, and it’s also where guessing costs you the most if you guess wrong.
What You Can Safely Check Yourself
A few things are worth ruling out before you book anything.
- Confirm the hood actually has power. Some units run the light and the fan off separate circuits or switches, so a dead fan with a working light points you somewhere specific.
- Check the breaker. Not glamorous, but it happens more often than you’d think, especially after a storm or a remodel.
- Pull the filter and look at it. If it’s dark and tacky, clean it before you assume anything else is wrong.
- Check the control panel isn’t sitting on a delay, timer, or low-speed setting you didn’t notice.
- Look at the outside vent cap too. Bird nests and leaf debris are common, and so is a flap that’s visibly stuck once you know to check for it.
That’s the safe list. If none of it explains what you’re seeing, stop there.
When to Call a Pro
Past that point you’re into motor testing, capacitor swaps, board replacement, or pulling ductwork apart, and all of that means working inside a mounted electrical appliance over your head, or handling duct that may have years of grease built up inside it. Grease-loaded duct is a fire hazard, not something to improvise on. Get the diagnosis wrong yourself and you’re just as likely to buy the wrong motor as fix the actual problem, which means paying for a part twice.
