Appliance repair warranty: what to actually look for

What a real appliance repair warranty covers, how long parts and labor should be guaranteed, and the contract terms that protect a homeowner.

What a Warranty Should Cover

  • Parts: if the replaced part fails again within the warranty period, you get a new one at no charge

  • Labor: if the same issue returns due to the repair performed, the technician returns at no charge

What Is NOT Covered by Repair Warranties

  • New, unrelated failures on other components

  • Physical damage or misuse after the repair

  • Failures caused by power surges (covered by homeowners insurance in most cases)

  • Manufacturer defects (separate from repair warranty: may be covered by product warranty)

Questions to Ask Any Appliance Repair Company

  • What warranty do you provide on parts? On labor?

  • Is the warranty in writing on my invoice?

  • What happens if the same problem returns in 6 months?

  • Do you use OEM parts or generic parts?
