Williams in Pinole

Williams heating and cooling in Pinole.

Much of Pinole's housing dates from the building boom of the 1940s through the 1960s. Houses from those years were often built with a gravity floor furnace under a hallway grate or a single wall furnace, and some still run the same kind of heater today. A Williams floor furnace is about as simple as gas heat gets, which is why it lasts, and its age is the main risk.

The heat exchanger is what matters most on a floor unit. It hangs under the house, it has heated and cooled thousands of times, and a crack lets combustion gases into the air rising through the grate. We inspect it on every floor furnace we service. Our technician for Pinole Valley and Old Town is based in Benicia, and the $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair if you go ahead.

Common repairs we handle.

  • Cracked heat exchanger on a hallway floor furnace. Rust-through or a crack in the heat exchanger lets exhaust mix with the heated air. Warning signs are soot around the grate, a smell when it runs, or a flame that jumps when air moves. If the exchanger is cracked, we red-tag the unit and quote a replacement. We do not patch it.
  • Floor furnace pilot blown out by drafts. Air moving through the grate and the crawlspace can snuff a small pilot on a windy night. We check the pilot shield and orifice, set the pilot flame to the right size, and test the thermocouple so the pilot holds against an ordinary draft.
  • Grate running too hot or the furnace cycling off. A rug over part of the grate, or a blocked return side, makes a floor furnace overheat and trip its limit, and the grate gets hot enough to burn a bare foot. We check the limit, the clearances and the burner input, and explain what has to stay off the grate.

FAQ

Williams in Pinole questions, answered.

  • Should we replace the floor furnace in our Pinole hallway with a wall unit?
When the heat exchanger is cracked or parts are gone, often yes. A wall furnace frees the hallway floor and is easier to service. It needs the right wall and a vent path, so we look at the layout before quoting. Sometimes a new floor furnace in the same opening is the simpler swap.
  • How do we know the floor furnace is safe to use this winter?
Have it inspected before the first cold night. We check the heat exchanger for cracks, the vent and draft, the pilot and gas valve, and look for soot around the grate. If it fails any of those, we shut it off and put the replacement options in writing.
  • Our house in Old Town is older than the postwar tracts. Can you still get parts?
For Williams, usually yes. Thermocouples, pilot assemblies, gas valves and thermostats are common parts. Some very old heaters use parts that no longer exist, and then replacement is the honest answer. We tell you which case you are in before any work.
