Williams in Richmond

Williams heating and cooling in Richmond.

Richmond has a deep stock of older housing, the Point Richmond cottages and the World War II era bungalows built fast for shipyard workers. Many of these small homes were heated by a single Williams wall or floor furnace and still are. We service these units across the city and keep them safe.

Richmond sits at the bay edge with damp, foggy air, so the older Williams units corrode at the pilot, burner, and heat exchanger faster than units in dry inland towns. I look hard at corrosion and the exchanger condition on every Richmond unit, because rust-through is a real safety issue here.

For Richmond's many small homes and ADU conversions with no duct space, a wall furnace remains the practical heat. We repair what is repairable and replace units that are past safe service life with the correct Williams model for the home.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Corroded pilot assembly from bay damp. Richmond's marine moisture rusts the pilot tubing and orifice on older Williams units, giving a weak or yellow pilot and unreliable ignition. I clean or replace the corroded pilot assembly, clear the burner ports, and confirm a clean blue flame that fully wraps the thermocouple tip.
  • Thermocouple corrosion and dropout. Corrosion at the thermocouple tip and connection drops the millivolt signal so the pilot lights but the gas valve will not hold. I test the output and replace the thermocouple with the correct length, then confirm the valve stays open across a full heat cycle.
  • Heat exchanger rust-through. On these bay-edge wartime bungalows the steel heat exchanger can rust through from the inside, venting combustion into the home. This is a hard safety stop. I inspect the exchanger on every visit and, if it has failed, I quote a replacement rather than repair an unsafe unit.

FAQ

Williams in Richmond questions, answered.

  • Do you cover Richmond from San Ramon, it is a bit of a drive?
Yes. Bay Area HVAC Service runs Richmond and the inner East Bay. From San Ramon I take 24 to 580 or 680 to 80, usually 35 to 50 minutes depending on traffic. I batch Richmond with Berkeley and Oakland calls so the trip is efficient and your window holds.
  • My old Williams furnace is rusty, is it still safe?
It comes down to the heat exchanger. If it is sound and only the pilot, thermocouple, or valve is corroded, I can clean or replace those parts and the unit is safe to run. If the exchanger is rusted through, which I do find on Richmond's bay-edge homes, I will not repair it and I will quote a safe replacement.
  • Is there a charge for the visit?
The diagnostic is $75 and waived with the repair. You get a written quote before any work. Repairs carry a 1 year warranty, and a new Williams install is 10 year parts and 10 year labor.
