Williams in Piedmont

Williams heating and cooling in Piedmont.

Piedmont's housing is largely 1910s through 1930s, Tudors and Craftsmans built before central forced-air was common. Many still run a single Williams wall or floor furnace as original or early heat. We service these older units and keep them safe in homes that often have no easy path for ductwork.

Piedmont sits up in the Oakland hills with cooler, shaded streets, so these homes run their furnace steadily through winter. The wear shows up in pilots, thermocouples, and gas valves, and I carry those parts to repair the common failures on the first visit when I can.

The larger Piedmont homes that want even, whole-house heat sometimes outgrow a single wall furnace, and we will talk through zoned options honestly. But for the many homes where a Williams unit is the right and original heat, we repair it properly or replace it with the correct model.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Floor furnace ignition trouble. The older Piedmont homes often have Williams gravity floor furnaces, and debris in the grille well fouls the pilot and burner over time. I pull the unit, clean the well and pilot assembly, replace a weak thermocouple, and verify the burner lights evenly without delay.
  • Thermocouple dropout in cold weather. Piedmont's cooler hill climate keeps the furnace running long, which wears the thermocouple until the main burner will not stay on. I read the millivolt output cold and hot, then replace the thermocouple with the correct length so the tip sits properly in the pilot flame.
  • Heat exchanger inspection on aged units. Many Piedmont units are very old, and the steel heat exchanger can crack or rust through, venting combustion into the home. This is a safety stop. I inspect the exchanger on every visit and, if it has failed, I quote a replacement instead of repairing an unsafe unit.

FAQ

Williams in Piedmont questions, answered.

  • How long is the drive to Piedmont from San Ramon?
From San Ramon I take 24 through the Caldecott or 680 to 580, usually 30 to 40 minutes depending on tunnel traffic. Piedmont sits right next to Oakland and Berkeley, so I group those calls together and give you a focused window.
  • My Piedmont home is from the 1920s, is its old Williams furnace still serviceable?
Often yes. If the heat exchanger is sound, the pilot, thermocouple, and valve are all serviceable parts and I can repair them same visit. If the exchanger is cracked or rusted through, I will not run it and I will give you a written replacement quote.
  • What is the cost to come out?
The diagnostic is $75 and waived with the repair. I provide a written quote before any work. Repairs are warranted 1 year, and a new Williams install carries 10 year parts and 10 year labor.
