Williams in Mountain View
Williams heating and cooling in Mountain View.
Old Mountain View and the streets around Castro have a stock of 1920s through 1950s bungalows and small houses heated by a single Williams wall furnace. Plenty of the Cuesta Park and Monta Loma ranch homes still run them too. We service these units, and for the many homes here with no ductwork the wall furnace is often still the practical heat source.
Mountain View gets a moderated bay climate, mild but with damp cool winters, so the load on an old Williams unit is steady rather than extreme. The failures I see are age-driven, worn pilots and tired gas valves, not hard-freeze stress. That means a clean repair usually buys these units several more good years.
With all the ADU and garage conversion work happening in Mountain View, we also get called to put a wall furnace into a unit that has no room for ducts. We install the correct Williams model and size it to the space rather than overshooting.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Standing pilot keeps going out. On the older Williams wall units common in Old Mountain View, a clogged pilot orifice and aged thermocouple are the usual cause. I clean the orifice, confirm a steady blue pilot flame wrapping the thermocouple tip, and replace the thermocouple if the millivolt reading is low.
- Slow or noisy fan on fan-assisted models. Some Mountain View homes have the fan-assisted Williams Monterey wall units. The blower motor bearings dry out and the fan gets loud or barely moves air. I check the motor and capacitor, lubricate or replace the motor, and clear the air path so the unit moves the heat it makes.
- Gas valve fails to open. After decades of cycling the Williams gas valve coil or internal diaphragm gives out and the main burner never lights even with a good pilot. I verify the limit and thermostat circuit, test the valve, and replace it with the correct Williams-spec valve set to proper manifold pressure.

FAQ
Williams in Mountain View questions, answered.
-
You are in San Ramon, how do you cover Mountain View?
Bay Area HVAC Service, our HVAC division, runs Peninsula and South Bay calls regularly. From San Ramon I take 680 to 880 or down 280, usually 45 to 55 minutes into Mountain View. I batch it with Sunnyvale, Los Altos, and Palo Alto jobs so the trip is efficient and your window is real. -
My bungalow has no ducts, is a wall furnace still a reasonable choice?
For a lot of Old Mountain View homes, yes. A wall furnace heats the central space without the cost of adding ductwork. If you want more even, whole-house heat we can talk ductless options, but a correctly sized Williams unit is an honest fit for many of these older houses. -
What is the cost to come look at it?
The diagnostic is $75 and I waive it when you approve the repair. I give you a written quote first. Repairs are warranted 1 year, and a new Williams install is 10 year parts and 10 year labor.
