Traulsen in San Pablo

Traulsen commercial service.

San Pablo sits on the plain between the Berkeley Hills and San Pablo Bay, with San Pablo Avenue through the middle and Rumrill Boulevard running north past shops and apartments. A Traulsen reach-in in a kitchen on either street is a heavy, serviceable cabinet, and when it starts running warm or short-cycling, the control is the first thing we test.

Thermostat trouble is the most common Traulsen fault. It drifts, it sticks, or it cuts the compressor in and out too often. We read the cabinet with a probe in the product, compare that to the control, and test the start components the short cycling has worn. The technician who handles San Pablo is based in Benicia. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair, and the quote is written before we start. Sealed-system work is covered by ADRIUM's EPA 608 Universal certification. CSLB #1136642.

Common repairs we handle.

  • Thermostat sticking or short-cycling the compressor. A failing thermostat can hold the compressor on too long and freeze product at the back, or cycle it on and off every few moments. Both wear the system. We measure the cut-in and cut-out temperatures against the setpoint and replace the control when it is outside its range.
  • Loose or burnt wiring at the compressor terminals. Vibration and heat loosen terminal connections, and a loose terminal arcs, burns and eventually fails. The symptoms come and go: a box that runs, stops, then runs again. We inspect the terminals, the relay or contactor and the power cord, and replace any burnt connectors.
  • Display reading different from the food. The display reads the air near its sensor, not the product. A sensor in the wrong spot or a failing probe shows a number that misleads everyone. We compare the display with a thermometer in the product and replace or reposition the sensor so the reading matches what the food actually sees.

FAQ

Traulsen in San Pablo questions, answered.

  • Our reach-in freezes lettuce at the back but reads fine on the display. Why?
The control may be running the compressor too long, or cold air from the coil may be hitting product stacked too close to it. We check the thermostat's cut-out point and the airflow, and suggest where to stack product so it stays out of the direct blast.
  • Is the compressor worth replacing on an older Traulsen?
Often, yes. The cabinet, doors and insulation on a Traulsen are built to last, so a new compressor in a sound cabinet can be a good repair. We quote it in writing with recovery, drier and charge included, next to what replacing the unit would take.
  • The cabinet trips the breaker at random. Where do you start?
At the plug and the cord, then the compressor terminals, the fan motors and the defrost heater. Any of them can short now and then. We test with the unit running and cycling, since a fault that only shows under load can look fine on a cold check.
