Salt air corrosion on outdoor condenser cabinets. The condenser cabinet, coil fins, and contactor corrode faster this close to the ocean, and I have opened up units here with rust through the cabinet sheet metal well before the equipment is old. I check the electrical contacts for corrosion first on any coastal service call, since that is usually the actual fault, not the compressor.
Ignitor wear from near-constant short cycling. The fog and damp cool keep the furnace cycling on and off through most of the year, and that repeated heating and cooling of the hot-surface ignitor shortens its life compared to a furnace that runs longer, steadier cycles. I test ignitor resistance and replace it before it fails completely.
Inducer motor bearing wear from damp, salt-laden air. The inducer motor bearings on the coast wear out faster than inland, between the marine layer moisture and the salt content in the air, and the furnace locks out on a pressure-switch fault when the inducer cannot spin up to speed. I replace the inducer assembly and clean the housing of any corrosion I find.
