Cold control running the fridge nonstop or not at all. The temperature control on older top-freezers wears out and either keeps the compressor running or never calls for cooling. We test it against the actual cabinet temperature, and check the defrost circuit too, since a frosted coil can make a good control look bad.
Evaporator fan squealing behind the freezer wall. A squeal or grind from behind the freezer wall that stops when you open the freezer door is usually the evaporator fan bearing, since the door switch cuts the fan. When the fan stops for good, the fresh-food side warms. We replace the motor with the right part for the actual maker and check the defrost while the panel is off.
Top-freezer door gasket gone stiff. Old gaskets harden and pull away at the corners, so warm, damp air leaks in, frost forms near the door and the compressor runs long. We fit a gasket in the right profile for the maker and square the door so it seals.
