Palo Alto has quietly become one of our best Haier cities, and the reason is the ADU boom. Backyard cottages in Barron Park, Midtown, and south Palo Alto get outfitted with compact and apartment-size Haier refrigerators because they fit the space and the budget, and those units run full-time for tenants and returning students. The main-house kitchens here rarely carry Haier, but the second unit in the garage and the fridge in the granny flat very often do.

Haier owns GE Appliances, but the Haier badge is the budget line and it fails in budget-line ways. Start relays, run capacitors, soft gaskets, and drifting thermostat boards make up most of my Palo Alto call sheet. I diagnose with instruments, quote in writing, waive the $75 diagnostic when you approve the repair, and warranty the work for one year. We schedule 7 days a week from our San Ramon base.

Every fridge with a dispenser or ice maker has a water inlet valve. The fittings can leak under the cabinet, or the solenoid fails and the dispenser and ice maker stop getting water.

ADU refrigerator clicking and not cooling. The compact Haier in a Palo Alto cottage clicks every few minutes and the cabinet sits warm. That click is the overload protector cutting a compressor that cannot start, almost always a failed PTC relay, sometimes with a bad run capacitor. Both parts are on my van.
Thermistor and board faults causing frozen produce. Electronic Haier models cycle off a thermistor, and when it drifts the board holds the compressor on too long. Tenants report frozen berries and iced-over milk. I meter the thermistor against its resistance chart before touching the board, because the sensor is the cheaper and more common culprit.
Gasket and hinge wear on rental units. Rental fridges get their doors slammed. Haier hinges loosen, the gasket stops meeting the cabinet at the top corner, and runtime doubles. I reset the hinges, replace the gasket, and check door swing so the fix survives the next tenant.
