The symptom is a hum, a click, then silence. I replace the relay and capacitor together and check that the condenser has breathing room, because a freezer shoved against a garage wall runs hot even after the repair.
Door and lid gaskets that stopped sealing. A chest freezer lid gasket that has gone stiff lets moist air in, and you get an ice shelf around the rim and a compressor that never rests. On upright Haier units the door gasket pulls away at the corners first. I test with a paper strip around the full perimeter and replace the gasket if it fails anywhere.
Thermostat control failures on undercounter units. Haier undercounter and beverage units in guest houses use a simple thermostat or a small control board, and both fail with age. The unit either freezes everything solid or barely cools. Parts are inexpensive, and on these units it is almost always worth fixing rather than replacing a built-in that matches the cabinetry.
