Goodman in El Cerrito
Goodman heating and cooling in El Cerrito.
El Cerrito homes split pretty clearly into two eras and two elevations. Down in the flats near San Pablo Avenue, stucco bungalows often carry a Goodman furnace added sometime after the original build, since central air was never standard here. Up the hill off Moeser Lane and Barrett Avenue, the 1940s to 1960s ranches and split-levels climbing toward the Wildcat Canyon ridge are where we see more Goodman heat pumps going in during electrification remodels. The marine layer keeps cooling load light most of the year, but those gray mornings mean the heating side has to perform.
A lot of these homes, especially the older flatland bungalows, have minimal or no real ductwork, which is why we do a fair number of Goodman ductless retrofits here. On the hillside, the split-levels present their own challenge, multiple floors off one system usually need zoning to keep every level comfortable.
Goodman is affordable on both ends. The unit is inexpensive to buy and, because Daikin parts are easy to get, inexpensive to repair, which fits a lot of El Cerrito remodel budgets. We give written quotes, waive the $75 diagnostic with the repair, and back installs with 10-year parts and labor. HVAC runs through our division, Bay Area HVAC Service.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Cracked heat exchanger on older Goodman furnaces. Furnaces added into El Cerrito flatland homes years back are starting to show heat exchanger cracks as they age. That's a safety issue, not just a comfort one. I inspect with a camera and run a combustion check before deciding whether it's a repair or a replacement.
- Mini-split head losing cooling after a duct-free retrofit. In the flatland bungalows without ducts we install Goodman ductless heads, and the most common call is a head that stops cooling. Usually a clogged drain or a low charge at the line set flare. I pressure-test the flares since a rushed retrofit leaks there first.
- Zoning imbalance on hillside split-level systems. A split-level off Barrett Avenue with one Goodman system covering multiple floors often runs hot upstairs and cold downstairs. I check the zone dampers and thermostat wiring before assuming the equipment itself is undersized.

FAQ
Goodman in El Cerrito questions, answered.
-
How long does it take to get to El Cerrito from San Ramon?
About 40 to 45 minutes via I-580 or Highway 24 to I-80. We route El Cerrito with our Berkeley and Richmond Inner East Bay stops, so scheduling often lines up the same week. -
My El Cerrito flatland home has no ducts. Can I still use Goodman?
Yes. We install Goodman ductless heads for exactly this situation, so you avoid tearing into an older bungalow for new ductwork. Each head heats and cools its own room, and skipping the ductwork keeps the job affordable. -
Is a heat pump enough for a split-level house on the hill?
Yes, when it's sized and zoned right. The marine layer keeps El Cerrito's winters mild, so a properly installed and zoned Goodman heat pump carries a split-level without backup heat in most cases. I size it to the actual layout, not a rule of thumb.
