Goodman in Albany
Goodman heating and cooling in Albany.
Albany is 1.8 square miles of mostly 1920s to 1940s stucco and wood bungalows on small lots along the Marin Avenue grid, plus UC Village family housing and homes on Albany Hill. Central air is close to nonexistent in this housing stock, and a lot of these bungalows started out on a wall furnace with no ducts anywhere in the house. Goodman furnaces show up where someone added forced air later, and Goodman heat pumps are going into more of these homes as owners electrify during a remodel.
Small lots mean small mechanical spaces, and outdoor equipment often ends up in a narrow side yard or tucked next to an ADU. That tight footprint is one reason ductless Goodman retrofits are common here, since running ducts through a compact 1920s bungalow, or into a basement unit or ADU, usually isn't practical.
Goodman is affordable on both ends. The unit is inexpensive to buy and, because Daikin parts are easy to get, inexpensive to repair, which fits a lot of Albany remodel and ADU budgets. We give written quotes, waive the $75 diagnostic with the repair, and back installs with 10-year parts and labor. HVAC runs through our division, Bay Area HVAC Service.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Cracked heat exchanger on older Goodman furnaces. Furnaces retrofitted into Albany's older bungalows show heat exchanger cracks as they age, especially in tight basement or crawlspace installs. That's a safety issue, not a comfort one. I inspect with a camera and a combustion check before deciding repair versus replacement.
- Mini-split head not cooling in an ADU or basement unit. Ductless Goodman heads are common in Albany ADUs and basement conversions, and the most frequent call is a head that stops cooling. Usually a clogged drain or a low charge at the line set flare, which is easy to get sloppy on a tight retrofit run. I pressure-test the flares before assuming a bigger problem.
- Igniter and flame sensor failures on damp mornings. Albany's marine-layer mornings keep furnace closets humid in the older bungalows, and the Goodman hot-surface igniter and flame sensor foul early from that moisture. The furnace clicks but won't light. I clean the sensor and test the igniter ohms rather than swapping parts on a guess.

FAQ
Goodman in Albany questions, answered.
-
How long does it take to get to Albany from San Ramon?
Getting here from San Ramon typically runs 40 to 45 minutes, taking I-580 or Highway 24 over to I-80. We route Albany with our Berkeley and Richmond Inner East Bay stops, and scheduling often lines up the same week. -
My Albany bungalow has no ducts. Can I still use Goodman?
Yes. We install Goodman ductless heads for exactly this situation, so you avoid tearing into a small historic bungalow for new ductwork. It heats and cools room by room without touching the walls. -
Is a heat pump enough heat for an ADU on a small Albany lot?
Yes, when it's sized right for the space. Albany's winters stay mild under the marine layer, so a properly sized Goodman heat pump handles an ADU or a small bungalow without backup heat in most cases. I size it to the actual square footage, not a rule of thumb.
