Goodman in Berkeley

Goodman heating and cooling in Berkeley.

Berkeley homes are old and they were built for a mild climate. The brown-shingle Craftsmans in the flats and the older houses up in the hills rarely had central air, so a lot of them carry a Goodman furnace added later and, more recently, a Goodman heat pump put in during an electrification project. The bay keeps things cool, so cooling load is light, but the heating still has to work on those gray foggy mornings.

Many of these homes have no real ductwork, or ducts that were squeezed into a house that fought them. That is why we do a fair number of Goodman ductless and mini-split style retrofits here, where running new ducts through a historic home is not practical. In the hills, the houses are bigger and often need zoning to handle the split-level layouts.

Goodman is affordable on both ends. The unit is cheap to buy and, because Daikin parts are easy to get, cheap to repair, which fits the budget on a lot of Berkeley remodels. We give written quotes, waive the $75 diagnostic with the repair, and back installs with 10-year parts and labor. HVAC runs through our division, Bay Area HVAC Service.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Cracked heat exchanger on older Goodman furnaces. Goodman furnaces that were retrofitted into Berkeley basements years ago show heat exchanger cracks as they age. That is a safety issue, not a comfort one. I inspect with a camera and a combustion check before deciding whether it is a repair or a replacement.
  • Mini-split head not cooling after a duct-free retrofit. In homes without ducts we install Goodman ductless heads, and the most common call is a head that stops cooling. Usually it is a clogged drain or a low charge at the line set flare. I pressure-test the flares since a sloppy retrofit leaks there first.
  • Igniter and flame sensor failures on damp foggy mornings. Berkeley fog keeps furnace closets humid, and the Goodman hot-surface igniter and flame sensor foul early. The furnace clicks but will not light. I clean the sensor and test the igniter ohms rather than just swapping parts.

FAQ

Goodman in Berkeley questions, answered.

  • How long does it take to get to Berkeley from San Ramon?
Through the Caldecott Tunnel it is usually 30 to 40 minutes. If we are already on a job in Oakland or Orinda next door, we can often reach you the same afternoon.
  • My Berkeley home has no ducts. Can I still use Goodman?
Yes. We install Goodman ductless heads for exactly this situation, so you avoid tearing up a historic home for new ductwork. It heats and cools room by room and the parts stay affordable.
  • Is a heat pump enough heat for a foggy Berkeley morning?
Yes, when it is sized right. The bay keeps winters mild, so a properly installed Goodman heat pump carries the load without backup heat in most homes. I size it to the house, not a rule of thumb.
