Cooper&Hunter in Portola Valley

Cooper&Hunter heating and cooling in Portola Valley.

Portola Valley's custom homes off Alpine Road and Portola Road usually run a full ducted or hydronic system for the main house, but the detached office, the art studio, or a casita tucked into a mid-century modern property near Ladera often gets a single Cooper&Hunter head instead of extending the main system out to it. It is a practical fit for a small standalone space, and a single head covering that one space handles it well as long as whoever installed it got the charge right in the first place.

A lot of these secondary structures see light, irregular use, an office that is only occupied some days, a studio used on weekends, and a slow leak or a control glitch can go unnoticed for a stretch before someone finds the space too warm or too cold to use. This is also a wildfire-aware community, and after a multi-day PG&E shutoff I get calls about a head that will not restart cleanly, which is usually a control fault rather than anything wrong with the compressor.

The wooded hills keep temperatures moderate most of the year, so these single-zone heads rarely work hard enough to fail from overwork. Charge, fitting, and control issues account for nearly everything I find.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Flare leak in an older casita installed years ago. A unit installed in a casita or studio near Ladera during an earlier remodel can develop a slow refrigerant leak as the structure settles and the flare fitting loses its grip over the years. I track down every suspect joint with a pressure test, redo the flare correctly, torque it down, evacuate the system fully, and charge it back in by weight rather than guessing.
  • Detached studio head not restarting cleanly after a PSPS outage. A multi-day power shutoff followed by a hard restart can leave a Cooper&Hunter head's control board stuck or throwing a code, even though nothing mechanical failed. I clear the fault, verify the board is responding correctly, and confirm the unit cycles normally before calling it done.
  • Coil drift on a ranch outbuilding head near an unpaved drive. A single-zone head in an outbuilding on a ranch property toward Skyline pulls in dust off an unpaved section of driveway, and that builds up on the coil and filter enough to make the room drift off setpoint. Cleaning the coil and filter and rechecking the charge usually settles it.

FAQ

Cooper&Hunter in Portola Valley questions, answered.

  • What is the drive time to Portola Valley from San Ramon?
Around 50 to 60 minutes on 680 south and then 92 or 280. Portola Valley falls on our Peninsula day with Hillsborough, and we send a written arrival time ahead of the visit.
  • Our power goes out for days during red flag warnings. Does the mini-split hold up okay?
Generally yes on the equipment side, but the control board can come back confused after a hard restart. If a head is not responding right after an outage, mention that when you call. It usually clears with a reset and a check, not a new part.
  • Will you service a single head that only covers our studio or casita?
Yes, that is common out here, a detached studio or casita on its own head. The diagnostic runs $99 and comes off the total once you approve the repair, and I always send the quote in writing first.
