Cooper&Hunter in Los Altos

Cooper&Hunter heating and cooling in Los Altos.

Los Altos is leafy ranch homes and a number of Eichlers, mostly 1950s and 1960s, set on flat lots under mature trees. Like Cupertino next door, the Eichlers here are a ductless story. Slab floors, post-and-beam ceilings, failed radiant heat, and no attic for ductwork. A mini-split is often the cleanest retrofit, and Cooper&Hunter is the budget pick to keep the cost in line.

The equipment is fine when it was installed and charged right. The install challenge in Los Altos is the same architectural problem. On an Eichler the line set has nowhere to hide, so it runs on an exterior wall where the flare joints face the weather and any rushed workmanship turns into a leak.

Los Altos sits in the mild Mid-Peninsula band, tree-shaded and tempered, so the cooling load is moderate. The units rarely overwork. That means most of what I fix here is charge and fitting related, which keeps a lot of these honest repairs instead of replacements.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Exterior flare leak on an Eichler line set. With no interior chase, the Eichler line set runs outside and the flare joints take the weather. They are the common Cooper&Hunter leak point. I leak test, reflare with the right tool, torque to spec, vacuum the system, and recharge by weight.
  • Radiant-replacement head not holding heat. When a mini-split takes over for failed radiant in a slab home, an undersized or low-charge head leaves rooms cool. I verify charge and head sizing against the heating load, repair any leak, and confirm whether the unit actually matches the space.
  • IR receiver or remote communication failure. A Cooper&Hunter head that stops answering the remote often has a failed IR receiver or indoor board. I test both, isolate the fault, and check parts stock before quoting since budget electronics can have a lead time on this brand.

FAQ

Cooper&Hunter in Los Altos questions, answered.

  • How far is Los Altos from your San Ramon base?
Los Altos is about 50 to 60 minutes from San Ramon down 680 to 880 or 280 depending on traffic. We route it with Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Menlo Park, and Palo Alto on Peninsula days so the trip is worthwhile.
  • Can a mini-split replace the failed radiant heat in my Eichler?
Yes. For a slab home with no ducts it is one of the better fixes. We size the heads to carry the heating load and route the line set as cleanly as the architecture allows. New installs carry 10 year parts and 10 year labor.
  • The head stopped responding to the remote. Is it worth fixing?
Often yes. That is usually a receiver or board fault, not a dead compressor. I diagnose it for $75 waived on repair, confirm parts availability before quoting, and back the repair for 1 year.
