Cooper&Hunter in Half Moon Bay
Cooper&Hunter in Half Moon Bay kitchens.
Half Moon Bay is our anchor for the whole Coastside, and that means Montara, Moss Beach, and El Granada get the same coverage as Half Moon Bay itself. The homes and small businesses around Main Street and the harbor lean on a Cooper&Hunter mini-split for heating more than cooling, since the fog holds this stretch of coast cool most of the year and the cooling load is light.
Salt air is the real factor out here, and it doesn't care what brand the outdoor unit is. The fine salt fog off the ocean settles into coil fins and electrical contacts and corrodes them faster than the same unit would wear twenty minutes inland. On a budget line like Cooper&Hunter, that corrosion shows up first as a contactor that won't pull in clean or a coil that's pitted through before the compressor itself is anywhere near done.
A technician based on the Peninsula in San Mateo County covers the Coastside now, so Half Moon Bay isn't the special trip up Highway 1 it used to be from San Ramon. The $99 diagnostic is waived if you book the repair, I write up the quote before starting any work, and we're out 7 days a week.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Salt-air corrosion on the outdoor coil. Ocean salt fog settles into the coil fins faster near the harbor and Main Street than it does even a few miles inland, and a pitted coil loses efficiency long before it fails outright. I clean and inspect the coil on a shorter interval out here than I would for the same Cooper&Hunter unit in San Ramon, and I replace fin stock once it's corroded through rather than just clean around it.
- Corroded contactor causing no-start. Salt air gets into the outdoor unit's electrical contacts and corrodes the contactor points, and a corroded contactor leaves the compressor and fan not starting even though the indoor head is calling for heat. I test the contactor under load and replace it once the pitting is confirmed, since cleaning corroded contacts is a short-term fix at best.
- Weak heating from low refrigerant charge in winter. Coastside winters ask a lot more of the heating side than the cooling side ever gets used, and a slow refrigerant leak shows up here as a head that runs constantly but never quite warms the room. I find the leak, usually at a flare joint that's started to corrode, fix it, and recharge to the nameplate weight so the unit actually heats through a foggy January.

FAQ
Cooper&Hunter in Half Moon Bay questions, answered.
-
Do you cover Montara, Moss Beach, and El Granada, or just Half Moon Bay proper?
All of it. Half Moon Bay is our anchor for the entire Coastside, so Montara, Moss Beach, and El Granada get the same coverage as Half Moon Bay itself. -
Is the Coastside a longer wait than the rest of the Peninsula?
Our technician is based on the Peninsula in San Mateo County, so Half Moon Bay isn't the special trip up Highway 1 from San Ramon it used to be. It's still a bit further out than Belmont or San Carlos, but it's a normal part of his route now. -
Why does my Cooper&Hunter unit seem to fail faster here than it would inland?
Salt air. The coil fins and the electrical contacts corrode faster this close to the ocean, so I'd plan on shorter service intervals out here than the manual assumes for an inland home. I check the coil and the contactor condition every time I'm out, not just the part you called about.
