Cooper&Hunter in East Palo Alto
Cooper&Hunter in East Palo Alto kitchens.
East Palo Alto has a lot of dense rental housing and working-family homes where an owner added an in-law unit or a rental addition to help with the mortgage, and Cooper&Hunter is a common choice for those spaces because it heats and cools one room or one small unit without the cost of extending central ductwork that often wasn't there to begin with.
These units get worked hard. A rental unit or an in-law space tends to run near capacity for more hours a day than a homeowner's own bedroom would, since a tenant isn't paying the utility bill directly and isn't shy about running it. That duty cycle wears contactors, capacitors, and sensors faster than a lightly used guest room would.
We have a technician based on the Peninsula in San Mateo County, which puts East Palo Alto on the same route as Menlo Park and Palo Alto. The $99 diagnostic is waived when you book the repair, I give a written quote up front, and we're out 7 days a week.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Contactor and capacitor wear from heavy rental use. A unit cooling or heating a rental space or an in-law unit for most of the day cycles far more than a typical bedroom head, and that duty cycle wears the outdoor contactor and run capacitor faster. A worn contactor leaves the outdoor fan and compressor not starting even though the indoor head is calling for it. I test both parts under load rather than replace on a guess.
- Flare leak on a tight garage-conversion install. A converted garage or in-law addition often routes the line set through a cramped utility space with sharper bends than a purpose-built room would need. Those bends stress the flare joints, and the unit loses capacity slowly rather than failing all at once. I pressure test to find the actual leak, reflare it, and recharge by weight.
- Indoor thermistor drift from constant heavy use. Heavy daily use in a rental unit wears the indoor sensor's accuracy sooner than light residential use does, and a drifted thermistor shows up as short-cycling or a room that never quite reaches the set temperature. I confirm the reading against an actual thermometer and replace the sensor once it's off, which is a small part compared to the compressor everyone worries about.

FAQ
Cooper&Hunter in East Palo Alto questions, answered.
-
Do you actually come out to East Palo Alto, or is it out of your normal territory?
Yes, we cover it directly. Our technician is based on the Peninsula in San Mateo County, which puts East Palo Alto on the same route as neighboring Menlo Park and Palo Alto, so it's not a special trip from San Ramon. -
My rental unit's mini-split runs constantly. Does that wear it out faster?
It does, and I won't pretend otherwise. A unit running most of the day in a rental or in-law space puts more hours on the contactor, capacitor, and sensor than a lightly used bedroom would, so I'd expect those parts to need attention sooner. -
What's the diagnostic fee, and does it apply if I book the repair?
It's $99, and that amount is waived once you book the repair with us. You get a written quote before any work starts, whether it's a rental unit or your own home.
