Comfortmaker in Livermore
Comfortmaker heating and cooling in Livermore.
Livermore runs hot. The inland valley heat that bakes the vineyards east of town also puts Comfortmaker AC condensers and heat pumps under serious load from June through September. Most of the housing stock I see out here is 1960s and 1970s ranch-style on the west side of town, ducted systems throughout, and a lot of those original Carrier-platform furnaces have been swapped for Comfortmaker or Heil over the years because the price was right and the equipment fit existing duct layouts. The SoftSound furnace line shows up fairly often in the newer Springtown and Sunset East neighborhoods where homeowners paid extra for the quieter blower. Out in the summer heat, the AC side gets worked hard, and that means capacitor and contactor failures are almost a seasonal item.
My diagnosis approach on Comfortmaker is faster than on an off-platform brand because the control board, igniter, inducer motor, and gas valve share the same Carrier family architecture I work on every week. I pull fault codes from the board before I touch anything else, then verify what the board is telling me against real measurements at the component. I do not swap parts on a guess. One check specific to Livermore: the outdoor units here sit in full sun on south- and west-facing slabs and they run in high ambient temperatures, which accelerates capacitor degradation faster than you would see closer to the Bay. I check capacitor microfarad values under load, not only at rest, because a cap that reads marginal at room temperature often fails completely at 100 degrees.
Bay Area HVAC Service covers Livermore out of our San Ramon base, which puts us about 20 minutes away. The diagnostic fee is $75 and we waive it when you approve the repair. You get a written quote before I do any work, no surprises on the invoice. We are EPA Section 608 Universal certified and licensed by the CSLB under number 1136642. Repairs carry a 1-year parts and labor warranty. New installs come with 10 years on parts and 10 years on labor. If there are utility or manufacturer rebates that apply to your situation, we confirm exactly what they pay at estimate time.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Cracked or open igniter, no heat on call. The silicon nitride igniter on Comfortmaker gas furnaces is a high-wear part. When it cracks or develops an open circuit, the board fires the inducer, the igniter glows for the trial period, and then the call for heat drops out because the gas valve never sees a proven flame. The board logs a lockout fault. I verify the igniter resistance is in spec before ordering the part, because a board fault code alone does not always point to the igniter. Replacement takes roughly 30 minutes and the furnace is back on the same visit.
- Flame sensor carboned over, short-cycle lockout. This is probably the most common Comfortmaker furnace call I run in Livermore. The flame sensor builds up a carbon layer over a few seasons of use, the microamp signal drops below what the board will accept, and the burner lights briefly then shuts down. The system retries two or three times and then locks out. Homeowners usually describe the furnace as starting and stopping every few minutes before giving up entirely. I clean the sensor rod and verify the microamp reading live on the meter. If the reading is still low after cleaning, the rod is replaced. Either way it is same or next-day work.
- Failed run capacitor or burned contactor on the condenser. In a Livermore summer, an outdoor Comfortmaker AC unit or heat pump can sit in ambient temperatures well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. That heat shortens capacitor life noticeably. A weak run capacitor causes the compressor or condenser fan motor to draw high locked-rotor amps trying to start, which then overloads the contactor. I see both fail together more often here than in cooler zip codes. Symptoms are the condenser running briefly then tripping, or a humming unit that will not start. I measure capacitance under load conditions and inspect the contactor points for pitting before quoting the repair.

FAQ
Comfortmaker in Livermore questions, answered.
-
Do you actually come out to Livermore, or is that outside your area?
Livermore is a regular stop for us. Our San Ramon shop is about 20 minutes west on 580, so we cover the whole Tri-Valley including Livermore, Pleasanton, and Dublin without a travel surcharge. We schedule the same day or next day for most calls. -
Is Comfortmaker a decent fit for a Livermore home, or should I be looking at a different brand?
It depends on what you are trying to do. Comfortmaker is a Carrier-platform brand, so the core components are proven and repair parts are easy to source. For a straightforward ducted replacement in one of the ranch-style homes that make up most of the west side of Livermore, it competes well on price and the install quality matters more than the nameplate. The SoftSound furnace line is worth considering if noise is a concern. Where I would steer someone toward a different option is a variable-refrigerant or ductless application, where other lines have more depth. I will tell you which direction makes sense after I see the house. -
What does the $75 diagnostic actually include, and what warranty do I get on the repair?
The $75 covers a full system check: I pull fault codes from the control board, verify pressures or combustion depending on the equipment type, measure electrical components, and give you a written quote for whatever needs fixing. If you approve the repair, the $75 is credited against the job and you pay nothing extra for the diagnosis. Parts and labor on the repair are covered for one year. On a new system installation the warranty steps up to 10 years on parts and 10 years on labor.
