Grinder that doses unevenly and drifts sour to bitter. On the Oracle and Barista Touch the grinder is the heart of the machine, and worn burrs or a clogged chute throw the dose off shot to shot. I pull the burrs, measure the wear, clear the fines from the path, and reset the grind and dose so they repeat. If the burrs are past their life I show you the measurement before replacing them, since a fresh set changes the grind setting you were used to.
Uneven temperature on a Dual Boiler. The Dual Boiler and Oracle hold brew and steam heat separately, and when a shot reads hot then cold the culprit is usually a heating element, a temperature sensor, or scale on the boiler wall throwing off the PID. I test each boiler under power, read the sensors, and check for buildup before deciding what to touch. On these machines a wrong guess is expensive, so I measure first.
Scale in a machine on softened or well water. Hillsborough homes often run softened or private well water, and both can fool you. Softened water still scales differently, and well water can carry minerals a filter misses. On a high-end Breville that has slowed down I descale properly, inspect the boiler and valves, and match a maintenance routine to your actual water instead of the generic schedule in the manual.
