Bosch Home Comfort in Los Altos
Bosch Home Comfort heating and cooling in Los Altos.
Los Altos sits in that comfortable Peninsula microclimate where summers are warm but not brutal, and winter heating loads are real but manageable. The housing stock tells the story: a lot of 1950s and 60s ranch-style tract homes with existing ductwork, originally built around gas furnaces. Those are exactly the houses where a Bosch IDS or BOVA inverter ducted heat pump makes sense as a gas conversion path. You keep the ducts, drop the furnace, and run one refrigerant system for both heating and cooling through the existing registers. That is the work we see here.
When a Bosch Home Comfort IDS comes in for diagnosis, the first thing we do is pull fault codes from the outdoor and indoor boards. Bosch inverter systems log specific fault codes that point at the inverter stage, communication wiring, refrigerant pressure, or sensor faults. We read those before we touch anything. On Peninsula installations, we also check the outdoor unit for corrosion on the service valves and coil fins. Los Altos is not right on the bay, but it is close enough that units tucked on the north or west side of a house without good airflow can show early oxidation on copper connections. We check charge with gauges and a superheat-subcooling calculation rather than adding refrigerant by weight.
This work runs through our HVAC division, Bay Area HVAC Service, which is separate from the Bosch dishwasher and oven repairs we do on the appliance side. The diagnostic fee is $75, and we waive it when you move forward with the repair. Every job gets a written quote before we start. We hold an EPA Section 608 Universal certification and our CSLB contractor license is 1136642. Repair work carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Inverter Board or Outdoor Control Board Fault. The most common call on the IDS series is a no-cooling or no-heating condition with the system throwing a communication error or an inverter fault code. The outdoor inverter drive board controls compressor speed and is the heart of the system. When it fails, the compressor simply does not run. We confirm the fault code, check DC bus voltage and IPM module outputs before condemning the board. Boards are not factory-stocked locally, so we are honest upfront about lead time on out-of-warranty parts.
- Thermistor or Discharge Line Sensor Failure. Bosch IDS units use multiple thermistors to protect the inverter compressor, including suction, discharge, and ambient sensors. A failed discharge thermistor will usually lock out the system with a high-temperature protection fault even when actual operating pressures are normal. We see this on units that have been running for several years, especially if the sensor wire harness has been exposed to weather at the condenser cabinet. We test resistance values against spec before replacing, so we are not guessing.
- Efficiency Decline and Refrigerant Charge Issue After Installation. A fair number of calls on Bosch inverter systems are not equipment failures at all. The complaint is that the system runs constantly or does not hit setpoint efficiently. On inverter ducted equipment, overcharge or undercharge by even a few ounces shifts the operating envelope enough to degrade performance noticeably. Many of these systems were charged by weight at install rather than target superheat and subcooling for the actual line set length. We verify charge with real measurements, check static pressure in the duct system since Ranch-era ductwork is often undersized for variable-speed airflow, and confirm the thermostat is wired and configured correctly for the Bosch communicating setup.

FAQ
Bosch Home Comfort in Los Altos questions, answered.
-
You're based in San Ramon. Do you actually come out to Los Altos?
Yes, we cover Los Altos regularly. San Ramon to Los Altos is a straightforward run down 680 to 101, usually 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. We schedule Peninsula calls in grouped routes so we are not charging you for a solo cross-bay trip. -
Is the Bosch IDS a good fit for the older homes in Los Altos?
For the right house, it is a solid option. The IDS is designed specifically for homes with existing ductwork, so a Los Altos ranch with a forced-air gas furnace and AC coil is a reasonable candidate for a direct swap. The inverter compressor runs quietly and modulates instead of cycling on and off, which the mild Peninsula climate actually takes advantage of since the system spends most of its time in partial load. Where the IDS is not the right fit is a home with no ducts or with seriously undersized ductwork. We have a look at static pressure during commissioning checks and we will tell you honestly if the duct system is working against the equipment. -
What does the $75 diagnostic actually include, and what kind of warranty do repairs carry?
The $75 covers a full system evaluation: we pull fault codes, check electrical connections, measure operating pressures, and go through the control wiring. You get a written quote with a line-item breakdown before we do anything. If you approve the repair, the $75 comes off the total. Parts and labor on repairs are covered for one year. On a new Bosch installation through us, that warranty extends to ten years on both parts and labor.
