Admiral in Pinole

Admiral in Pinole kitchens.

Pinole's houses mostly went up during the postwar boom of the 1940s through the 1960s, and many of those kitchens have been redone since. An older Admiral may still be working in one of them, as the garage spare in a Pinole Valley three-bedroom or as the main fridge in a smaller house near Old Town. The oldest design we service is the cycle-defrost refrigerator, the single-door model with a small freezer compartment inside.

Cycle-defrost units run for a very long time, and then the compressor finally seizes. Before calling it, our technician tests the start relay and the overload, because a failed relay can look exactly like a dead compressor and costs a fraction to replace. If the compressor really is gone, we tell you a new fridge is the better spend. Pinole is covered by our technician based in Benicia. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair when you go ahead.

Common repairs we handle.

  • Single-door fridge humming but not cooling. The compressor tries to start, the overload trips, and it clicks off again. We check the relay and overload with a meter and measure the compressor windings. A relay is a small repair. A shorted or locked compressor on a cycle-defrost unit is where we recommend replacement.
  • Freezer compartment frosting shut. On a cycle-defrost fridge the small freezer section is not frost-free, so ice builds on the freezer plate until the little door will not close. A worn door seal speeds it up. We replace the seal where one is still available and show you how to defrost the compartment safely.
  • Top-freezer cold control stuck on. When the fridge freezes lettuce on every setting or runs without stopping, the cold control behind the dial has often stuck closed. We confirm it with a temperature reading and swap it for a cross-referenced Maytag or Whirlpool part.

FAQ

Admiral in Pinole questions, answered.

  • Our single-door Admiral dates from the 1980s. Can you save it?
Often, if the problem is a relay, a cold control or a door seal. If the compressor has seized, no. A compressor on a unit that old costs more than the fridge is worth, and we will say so before you spend anything beyond the diagnostic.
  • Why does the freezer box inside our old fridge keep icing up?
That compartment is manual defrost by design. Ice builds with every door opening, faster when the seal is tired. Empty it, unplug the fridge and let it melt every few months. If it ices over within days of a defrost, the door seal is the first thing we check.
  • Can you tell over the phone whether a visit makes sense?
Sometimes. Read us the model number from the tag inside the fridge and describe what it does. If it hums and clicks off, we explain the relay-or-compressor question before booking, so you know what the diagnostic is likely to find.
