Much of Hercules inland of Interstate 80 went up in the 1970s and 1980s, in subdivisions locals still call the Birds, the Gemstones or the Astronauts. When a kitchen in one of those two-story houses gets a new fridge, the old Admiral top-freezer often moves to the garage. It keeps going for years, and then one morning there is water under the crisper drawer.

That water is usually the defrost drain. Frost melts off the evaporator coil during each defrost and runs down a small drain to a pan under the fridge. When ice closes the drain, meltwater backs up into the freezer and spills into the fresh-food side. It is one of the cheaper Admiral repairs. Common repairs we handle.

Freezer drain iced over and leaking into the crisper. We thaw the drain, flush it with warm water and clear the trough under the coil. If the drain froze because the defrost heater is weak, the clog will come back, so we test the heater and the defrost thermostat before calling the job done.

On an Admiral the culprit is the timer, the heater or the defrost thermostat, and we test all three. Evaporator fan squealing behind the freezer wall. The evaporator fan pulls cold air off the freezer coil and pushes it into the fridge side. A worn motor squeals or grinds, and when it finally stops, the fresh-food side warms while the freezer still feels cold. We replace it with a matching Maytag or Whirlpool motor.
