SUB-ZERO ICE MAKER · WOODSIDE
Sub-Zero ice maker repair in Woodside? We fix it.
A Sub-Zero that stops making ice usually has one broken link in a short chain: water in, freeze, harvest, bin. Sub-Zero's service manual for its built-in models lists 16 things to check when there's no ice or slow ice. Most of them are about the water supply and the freezer temperature, not the ice maker itself. Run through Sub-Zero's owner checklist below first. If that doesn't bring the ice back, book a diagnostic.
We handle Sub-Zero ice maker repair repairs across Woodside, from Mountain Home Road corridor, Kings Mountain, Skywood to the surrounding neighborhoods. Getting to Woodside from San Ramon runs 50 to 60 minutes, down 680 and then over on 92 or 280 depending on how the Peninsula traffic sits that day. We route it with Hillsborough on the same Peninsula day, and booked windows carry a written arrival time.

Why this happens
What we look for first.
- Ice maker switched off, paused, or locked out. The control can stop ice in ways that look like a broken part. The first two no-ice causes in Sub-Zero's built-in (BI) service manual are the ice maker switched off and the shut-off arm left up. The control also pauses the ice maker for 45 minutes after every harvest, turns it off in Sabbath mode, and won't run more than 20 harvests in a row between door openings. If the water valve stays open longer than 35 seconds, the ice maker shuts down for 24 hours. After 5 of those in a row, the ICE and service icons flash and the ice maker stays off until the cause is fixed and the fault is cleared.
- Water isn't reaching the mold. The manual's water list is short: the supply turned off, a pinched, kinked or clogged line, a saddle valve installed wrong or not fully open, water frozen in the inlet tube, loose wiring, or a failed water valve. A heater keeps the fill tube clear the whole time the ice maker is on, so a frozen tube means testing that heater circuit, not just thawing the ice. Each fill is only about 3.5 oz of water, and the manual also ties small or hollow cubes to a water supply that isn't steady.
- Water filter overdue, removed, or paired with reverse osmosis. Sub-Zero says to replace the filter when the reminder shows, when water pressure drops, when cubes turn hollow, or every 12 months, whichever comes first. It's certified for up to 750 gallons. Depending on when a BI unit was built, it shuts the ice maker off whenever the filter or the filter bypass plug is removed, so pulling the filter to test it can stop ice completely. With a reverse osmosis system, Sub-Zero recommends bypassing the filter, and the RO system has to deliver a constant 30 to 100 psi at all times.
- Freezer too warm or airflow blocked. The ice maker only starts a harvest when its thermostat closes at about 15°F, give or take 3 degrees. A warm freezer means slow ice or none. Sub-Zero's owner checklist says the freezer should be near 0°F, and the service table lists poor airflow over the ice maker as a separate cause. If the whole freezer is warm, the ice maker is only the symptom and the cooling problem gets fixed first.
- Ice maker assembly failed. On Sub-Zero built-ins the ice maker is replaced as one assembly. The service manual says its individual components aren't available for service. Before ordering one, a technician tests the motor, the thermostat, the mold heater and the internal switches, and checks the wiring and the power coming from the control board. A cube jam or a tripped thermal cutout can also stop the ejector, and the manual says to fix that cause first.
- Small, hollow, or discolored cubes. For hollow or small cubes the BI manual lists an ice maker or cabinet that isn't level, an unsteady water supply, the thermostat, and the fill signal from the control board. The owner guide adds a dirty condenser and an old filter. Blue or green ice points to corrosion in a copper supply line, which Sub-Zero sends to a plumber. Black flecks in the cubes mean stop using the ice and book service.

How we diagnose and fix it
The walk-in workflow.
- 01
Check the freezer temperature and the airflow around the ice maker before touching the ice maker itself.
- 02
Confirm the ice maker is switched on, the shut-off arm is down, the bin is seated, and the control hasn't locked the ice maker out after a long fill.
- 03
Check the supply valve, the line behind the unit, the filter's age, and whether the house runs reverse osmosis.
- 04
Skip the 45-minute pause the way Sub-Zero's manual describes, start a cycle by hand, and watch the fill, the freeze and the harvest.
- 05
Meter the water valve and the fill tube heater, then test the ice maker's thermostat, heater, motor and switches against Sub-Zero's specs.
- 06
Quote the confirmed repair in writing before any work starts.

FAQ
Sub-Zero ice maker in Woodside questions.
-
Why is my Sub-Zero not making ice?
Usually because water isn't reaching the mold or the freezer isn't cold enough to start a harvest. Start with Sub-Zero's own checklist on this page: the ice icon showing, at least 24 hours since the ice maker was turned on, a freezer near 0°F, the bin seated, the arm down, water supplied, and a filter changed in the last 12 months. If all of that checks out, the cause is a valve, the fill tube heater, the ice maker assembly or the control, and that takes testing. -
My Sub-Zero dispenses water but makes no ice. What does that mean?
If the dispenser works, water is reaching the unit, so the fault sits closer to the ice maker. On built-in models the control powers the ice maker's water valve on its own circuit. The usual suspects are a frozen fill tube, that valve or its wiring, the ice maker assembly, or a freezer running too warm. A technician sorts it out by watching a cycle and metering each part. -
How long does a Sub-Zero take to start making ice?
Sub-Zero's checklist asks you to give the ice maker at least 24 hours after it's turned on, and the owner guide says to throw out the first few batches. The control also waits 45 minutes after every harvest before the next one, so a slow first day is normal. -
Can I reset the ice maker myself?
You can switch it off and back on from the control panel, as the owner guide shows. On BI models that also skips the 45-minute pause after a harvest. It won't clear a lockout. If the ICE and service icons flash, the control has shut the ice maker off after repeated long fills, and the cause has to be found before the fault is cleared. For codes on the display, see our Sub-Zero error codes guide. -
Is my Sub-Zero still under the factory warranty?
Sub-Zero's current Classic guide lists a full 2-year warranty, a full 5-year sealed system warranty, and a limited 12-year sealed system warranty, counted from the install date. If your unit is inside that window, call Sub-Zero first, because warranty work goes through Sub-Zero Factory Certified Service. We're an independent Sub-Zero specialist, not a dealer, and we take the out-of-warranty repairs. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair. -
