I check contact surfaces for pitting before assuming the whole contactor needs replacing, but out here it usually does.
Coil corrosion cutting cooling capacity. A York condenser coil exposed to onshore air for years develops surface corrosion that reduces heat transfer even before it leaks. If a unit here is running long cycles and losing capacity, I check the coil condition alongside the refrigerant charge rather than assuming a simple recharge fixes it.
Furnace running heavy on fog season mornings. Pacifica sees more fog and onshore wind days than most of the Peninsula, so the flame sensor and ignitor on an older York furnace see more start cycles per year than the house's square footage would suggest. I clean or replace those wear parts and check flame signal strength before I look at anything more expensive.
