York in El Cerrito
York heating and cooling in El Cerrito.
El Cerrito sits under the same marine layer as the rest of the inner bay, so summers stay mild and heating matters more than cooling here. The 1940s through 1960s ranches and split-levels climbing off Moeser Lane and Barrett Avenue toward the Wildcat Canyon ridge were mostly built with wall or floor furnaces, and a lot of those original York units are still in service. Down near San Pablo Avenue the stucco bungalows in the flats carry the same vintage of equipment, just with less sun and a slightly damper cycle.
Hillside jobs mean working a furnace tucked into a crawlspace on a lot that climbs, or a wall unit boxed into a hallway that was never meant to be serviced twice. The flats are more straightforward, with easier attic and closet access, and that split shapes how long a call runs before we ever touch the furnace. Mini-split retrofits are picking up on the hill homes that get more sun and want zoned cooling without redoing the ducts.
This is handled through Bay Area HVAC Service, our HVAC division. Our techs hold EPA 608 Universal certification, we operate under CSLB license #1136642, we're on call seven days, and every job gets a written quote before work starts. Book the repair and the $99 diagnostic comes off the invoice.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Flame sensor drops the burner. These furnaces run short cycles on cool, foggy mornings and then sit idle, and that pattern oxidizes the York flame sensor until the burner lights and then drops out. I clean or replace it and check the flame current so it holds through a full cycle.
- Ignitor cracked in an old wall furnace. A lot of the wall and floor furnaces up on the hillside streets are original to the house, and the hot surface ignitor goes brittle with age. Once it cracks, nothing lights. I keep the common ignitors on the van, so most of these close in one visit.
- Control board after a long idle. A mild fog season means the York board sits unused for months, and when the first cold snap hits it can fail to fire the blower or the burners. I check the board and its connectors first, because a loose lead is more common than a dead board.

FAQ
York in El Cerrito questions, answered.
-
How long does it take to get to El Cerrito from San Ramon?
El Cerrito runs on our Berkeley and Richmond Inner East Bay days. From San Ramon it's about 40 to 45 minutes via 580 or Highway 24 into 80. A booked window gets you a written arrival time before we head out. -
My hillside home only has a wall furnace, no ducts anywhere. Can you still help?
Yes. Wall and floor furnaces are common on the hill streets above the fog line, and we service York units of that type directly. If you'd rather add zoned cooling without opening up the walls, we can talk through a mini-split retrofit. -
Is there a charge just to find out what's wrong?
It's $99, and that amount comes off the bill once you approve the repair. Nothing gets done until you've signed off on a written quote.
